About the Author
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) is one of the greatest lyric German poets. Born in Prague, he published his first book of poems, Leben und Lieber, at age nineteen. He met Lou Salomé, the talented and spirited daughter of a Russian army officer, who influenced him deeply. In 1902 he became a friend, and for a time the secretary, of Rodin, and it was during his twelve-year Paris residence that Rilke enjoyed his greatest poetic activity. In 1919 he went to Switzerland where he spent the last years of his life. It was there that he wrote his last two works, Duino Elegies (1923) and The Sonnets to Orpheus (1923).
 
Stephen Mitchell was born in Brooklyn in 1943 and studied at Amherst, the University of Paris, and Yale. Considered one of the preeminent translators of his generation, he has translated many classic texts including Gilgamesh, The Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching, and The Book of Job.

I just thought I would clarify that this collection is more comprehensive than The Selected Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, also translated by Stephen Mitchell. Ahead of All Parting includes all poems in the aforementioned book and adds many more.

Consummate Rilke Translation

Of the volumes in my collection of Rilke work, this is the single book I reach for most often. Stephen Mitchell is a master of translation with a consummate feel for nuance that is imperative in poetry translating. For anyone embarked on a personal spiritual journey, reading Rilke is essential. Mitchell, an able guide on such a journey, has selected powerful, insightful works. The first 2-verse poem, "I live my life in widening rings," is alone worthy of years of contemplation. And I never cease to find inspiration and solace in "For the Sake of a Single Poem." I consider "Ahead of All Parting" one of the five most important books I own.

Absolutely magnificent

Very few translations of poetry manage to capture not only the content but the "feel" of the original text. Mitchell's rendering of Rilke is one of these rarities: without slavishly imitating Rilke's rhythms or attempting to pin down his sometimes elusive meanings, he's enabled the non-German-speaker to experience Rilke's poetry in spirit as well as sense. (I'm not a Rilke scholar, but I know enough German to read and appreciate the originals.) The notes are useful too -- sometimes an idea that Rilke expressed obliquely in a poem is much clearer in his correspondence! This volume contains all of Rilke's "major" poetry and selections from his prose, so it's a good, reasonably priced introduction to his work. (And the book has a good "feel" too -- heavy paper, clear type, a solid cover -- which is rare in these days of cheap computer-assisted printing!) This book belongs in the library of anyone who's serious about 20th century poetry -- and anyone who appreciates the art of translation.

I recommand this book

Stein has taken on a great challenge to break conventional ways of looking at words. Her desire to raise herself out of the "box" of literary tradition and create her own space and shape has resulted this fine book. Many hours can be spent on this thin volume, but yet it wouldn't be enough time to discover all the devises she employs. I became excited not because of her interesting juxtaposing of unrelated, and very strange yet unique, images, but also her ability to keep moving the words. For example, in the section titled Objects, Ms Stein has several poems that use repetition as a devise to create rhythm. In one poem, "A Seltzer Bottle" the repetition of "s" sounds shake up the poem. Certainly she asks us to question what a word means and how meaning can be easily manipulated, but she also is a master of "sound over sense." In "A Red Hat" she connects independent clauses, sentences, or lines by repeating a word from the previous independent clause, sentence, or line. "A dark grey, a very dark grey, a quite dark grey is monstrous ordi-/ narily, it is so monstrous because there is no red in it. If red is in/ everything it is not necessary. Is that not an argument for any use of/ it and even so is there any place that is better, is there any place that/ has so much stretched out." "Grey" melts into "monstrous", "monstrous" into "red", and "red" into "is".

Endlessly rereadable; the best prose poem of all time

I don't have as much patience as some with Stein's other work, but "Tender Buttons" is sublime. It leads the mind down paths it would never otherwise follow. I'm basically a philistine, and a populist, but this book never loses its splendour. Here (and here only, for me) Gertrude Stein had perfect pitch.

Utter frustration at the first glance -- however, once you come to understand her methods and the purpose behind these poetic morsels, they will consume you. Stein's spare style inspired a generation of writers, and this is one of her most personal attempts at minimalist writing. It conflates the visual medium of writing with rhythmic and rhyming aural sensations. Give it time. Pick it up. Put it down. Pick it up again. You'll be glad that you did.

Wow! Unbelievable! A work of art in its own right.

I bought this book as a present for my Australian wife. I always told her that the old translation we had by Khairallah was missing many verses and tried to translate it for her myself. When I saw this book on Amazon, I was so happy to read: "complete" and "accurate". So I bought it and was so happy to see that they included all of Gibran's original illustrations in high quality. Also, the translation is SPOT ON and beautifully written! I found myself comparing the Arabic in the back of the book to the corresponding English verse. I think this deserves to be acknowledged as a great work in English poetry by itself and not just as a fantastic translation. I highly, highly recommend it.

Naked…in the raw, baring all, vulnerable, exposed. Not many can comfortably encompass such a state of openness and honesty. McGee's well-expressed poetry is powerfully revealing. It strips away all of the camouflages we become used to wearing when life's experiences result in a myriad of adversity, conflict, and trials being birthed within. I love how McGee dives inside of himself, revealing fragments of addiction, love, sorrow, and perhaps most important, self discovery. As you travel through his poems you get a glimpse of a broken journey that comes full circle. There is a whole in every part and a freedom in every truth.

I just finished Wild Horses Don’t Stop at Whoa by Robin L. Martinez. This short book contains three stories, one of which is a novella, and more than 20 poems. The stories are interconnected, which provides an interesting continuity. The poetry is of the non-rhyming variety, yet many of them seem to resonate with the stories themselves.

Wild Horses isn’t the kind of fiction I typically read. I usually stick with fantasy, science fiction, and the occasional horror novel. However, a friend recommended it and I am so glad I made time to read this collection. There wasn’t even a hint of horror, sci-fi, or the supernatural in the tale, and it didn’t need anything of the sort.

Of the three stories, I enjoyed the novella most. I loved the therapy transcripts, some of which can be read in the free preview, as it allowed us to peek into Cece’s mind as the tale unfolded. Watching her journey of self-discovery as the story progressed drew me in and demanded that I continue reading to see how things turned out. It didn’t end the way I expected. The story took a hard left turn toward the end and I must say that I didn’t see it coming. There was more character development in this short novella than in many full-length mainstream books I’ve read.

Ms. Martinez’s poetry was interspersed throughout the book, peppering the pages like sugary sprinkles on a frosted doughnut. It reminded me that I don’t read poetry often enough. One of my favorite poems was entitled Raising Puck, wherein a mother describes her tumultuous relationship with her son. It begins:

To mother a creature like Robin Goodfellow
demands a certain madness; a willingness to step into primordial forests
without map, compass, or weapon.
To seek love from a being, whose affections and tempers
are as capricious as the wind
is to ask for heartbreak and humor in equal measure.

I’ve read that poem at least half a dozen times.
