I have always been the one in my family to gravitate towards the aesthetics of Art, music, and poetry. I was always fascinated by all the great artists and poets. I experimented a lot with various mediums of expression, but nothing ever came close to how words would make me feel. As a child, I had the urge to create something outside of myself. I didn't know exactly what or how I was going do that, I just knew I needed to take everything out of myself, all the depression, all the perversion, all the love, all the confusion, everything needed to go. For a long while I studied the words and writing styles of many authors. I even went so far as to try to recreate certain pieces they wrote. That didn't last too long before I stopped. I wanted to find my certain style. I knew exactly how I wanted it to come out, but I didn't know how I was going to project that. I found myself a muse. We went out to the desert to live for a couple years. And that's where I finally discovered how to project it. I wanted everything to be chaotic. I wanted everything to be nonsense, because that's how I saw everything, just beautiful nonsense, and nothing else. If my words aim to achieve anything, it's to allow you to change the way we view words, and poetry. Poetry is anything and everything, however written, however boring, however redundant, and however spoken. Just please for the love of poetry, stand up and read it out loud. Then burn everything, it's much more beautiful that way.

About the Author
BIO Muriel Angelil started to write in the 1980’s encouraged by her late husband Joseph Godwin who also was a writer. She has written poetry, children’s stories a journal and technical articles on Expressive Art Therapy. Recently she started to attend an Open Mic in Newburyport and her journey as a poet was launched. In a year, she has written over one hundred poems describing her relationships with family members, lovers and friends and her personal thoughts on death, love, dance and travels. Angelil has also published a memoir: Back to the Past, A Daughter of the Nile; which describes her life in Alexandria, Egypt and her reasons for leaving and settling in the USA. Muriel Angelil is also an artist and has been exhibiting her paintings, monotypes and sculptures for the last thirty years. Her artworks show abstracted figurative shapes inspired by her life: including dancers, horses, little girls, women, and men. Other works are simply abstracts inspired by her love of music and especially jazz. All her art shows a sense of movement and color just like her life.

These poems are like ordinary photographs but ones with the added dimensions of compassion, humor, and insight into the human condition. I am reminded of a woman looking all around her, up and down and sideways, past and future and present, just before leaping into the great unknown. You can almost hear her reading each word clearly, fearlessly, wonderfully in that blank space of a page. Brava!

Musical muse

I’ve just finished a delightful composition of words by Christine Tsen. She offers a velvet smooth ride on rails of muse and melody.
O Fortuna: "...flickering wings though vanishing time".
Box Sweets: "...as rich as dark chocolates".

From outpourings to Introverting: "...between notes - inspired chasm".

She paints images in passing: "...bats like leather dishrags hanging".
"My father in his soft shirt smelling of leaves and smoke".

Tsen looks inward in, Recitative: "I’m straight and plain as a girl, it’s just cruel".
Fortissimo Fourth: holds childhood memories: "... we’d wonder back home arm and arm, Popsicles sticking us together."
"My father in his soft shirt smelling of leaves and smoke".

We pass through seasons.
Saffron Spring: "...skin drunk with sun semen, rolling naked in fields of Brahmsian rapture". Love that line!

She takes us mind tripping though sounds and colors: "A rosary of hues."

Music For Your Soul

Cellography is music to my mind, heart, and soul. The words are crisp and inviting. I feel as though I sat with Ms. Tsen around a table having tea and listening to her make music with words. I will read this over and over when I feel as though my soul needs a pick me up. I highly recommend this lovely collection of soothing, bathing poems. You won't be the same again.

He works for Small Press Distribution and lives in Oakland.

A Moveable Feast

The poems of The Islands, Sakkis' longest and most complete version of his poetics, are by turns a complex and miraculously fluid set of lyrics, with narrative buried in them, sometimes deep under strata of time, sometimes in the shallowest of cuts, so that a child might run his fingers through the sand and pick up a star. Listening to Sakkis read his poetry, you get the sense on the one hand that he has a vatic vision, that his mouth is moving but another's voice is emanating from his throat, like Spicer's receiver, and at other times I feel like he is trying earnestly to explain to us what life is like on that other planet he hails from--David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth, broken by the sense of Earth, by our requirements for nouns and verbs and image.

I have been reading his work for ten years now, maybe more, and I remember in his previous book RUDE GIRL how the final part was called "The Breakable Ones," with its suggestion of human fragility; and this volume, THE ISLANDS, ends with a poem called "The Moveable Ones (after Michael Palmer") and I see the question of fragility turning into one of modularity, like we're all chess pieces thrown this way and that way by an angry Bobby Fischer type of God. "We are at war/ on the floor," "We are at war/ near our face." The poem turns on the similarity of bridges to the curve of the body, first, of "head to ass," and later, of "scalp to ass," and how the excellence of the one turns into the fear of the other--elsewhere the "Disney/ arches of Munich." The little suffix "ing" that ends most gerunds pops up unconnected to a verb here and there, opening a line as if torn away from its agency, yet retaining the shape of its agent. These moves I interpret as signs of an increased confidence and surety, or perhaps a renewed belief that the shapes of things in the divination are coming to him more clearly. "Yesterday you met a young Benjamin/ over soapy Turkish coffee." This character, the young Benjamin, returns several times, and each time I understand more clearly that he, Sakkis, is the young Benjamin, or at least the young Benjamin Hollander.

I'm re-reading what I've written and I'm seeing that maybe it isn't very useful way of writing a review, but the fact is, the poetry of The Island while very beautiful is rather dense in syntax and in affect, as I can see my young colleague Mr. Krull has already said above, so it's hard to describe on a certain level--in such situations I have learned to go counterintuitive and paraphrase, translate, as the simplest and shiniest terms possible. It is a more political book than its predecessor, or indeed most poetry of today; it is a travel book and a guide to the Greek islands, if a twisted one; it is a book about love and loss; it is a work of Imagist genius; it is a book of family life and feeling deracinated and uprooted even in one's own shoes. Amazon has this new thing where when you swing your cursor through the stars--when writing a rating--you pass from one star to two, to three, and at each pass words appear to tell you what each rating might mean to a language-less person maybe? Anyhow when I go over to five stars these words appear, "I love it." I'm reading these signs that this book is really amazing. I love it.

John Sakkis's book-length serial poem, THE ISLANDS, is a rhythmical series about place, family, and friends. In it, I saw the influences of Benjamin Hollander, Norma Cole, Jack Spicer, Michael Palmer, and a slew of others, all the while remaining uniquely his own. His poetry is recognizable for having hard edges that, as a whole, flows smoothly. I think this comes from his appreciation for hip-hop and words that have weight--meat on their bones. Even the most skeletal of his poems feel fat and heavy. What strikes me about this book, too, is the mysterious dreamlike quality it creates (which makes me think of John Ashbery), all the while seeming firmly rooted in the real-world and real-life events and occurrences. A pleasure to read.

Be Thankful Whoever You Are

This little book gives children the opportunity to be introduced to life around them. How each life has something to be thankful for. Very suitable for 2-8 year olds. After a few reads I can hear children saying the book out loud along with the reader. The kindle addition has no pictures it could easily be a five with pictures. The format in kindle addition does not automatically show it to be prose.

About the Author
Z.M. Wise is a poet and poetry activist, writing since his first steps as a child. He has been a written-word poet for almost two decades and a spoken-word poet for five years. He is an Assistant Editor of Harbinger Asylum, a Houston-based, internationally known poetry magazine. He is co-owner of Transcendent Zero Press, an independent publishing house for poetry, with his dear friend and founder Dustin Pickering. He hosts a weekly reading at San Jacinto College. His first book of poetry, ‘Take Me Back, Kingswood Clock,’ published by MavLit, is available as both a hard copy and ebook on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Nook, and Kindle. His second book that was released by Transcendent Zero Press, ‘The Wandering Poet,’ is available in both hard copy and digital form. About the Author
The author grew up in a small town in South Alabama and on the Gulf Coast of Florida. After being honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1980 he received a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and has worked as a licensed psychotherapist for over thirty years. He also received a Master's degree in the Humanities from The University of West Florida where he taught briefly as an adjunct. He and his family reside near Florida's Gulf Coast.

I have known David since Jr. High and know that all of these poems were wrenched from his heart and come from true life experience. I think that I may be in one of them since I shared his life as his wife for seven years. Hope to see more of his work published soon.

Drawing on two decades worth of award-winning poetry, Marilyn Hacker’s generous selections in A Stranger’s Mirror include work from four previous volumes along with twenty-five new poems, ranging in locale from a solitary bedroom to a refugee camp.

In a multiplicity of voices, Hacker engages with translations of French and Francophone poets. Her poems belong to an urban world of cafés, bookshops, bridges, traffic, demonstrations, conversations, and solitudes. From there, Hacker reaches out to other sites and personas: a refugee camp on the Turkish/Syrian border; contrapuntal monologues of a Palestinian and an Israeli poet; intimate and international exchanges abbreviated on Skype―perhaps with gunfire in the background.

Marilyn Hacker is the recipient of the National Book Award, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the Robert Fagles Translation Prize, and the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. Her collection Winter Numbers received a Lambda Literary Award and the Lenore Marshall Award of the Academy of American Poets. She lives in Paris, France.

Marylin Hacker is a genius. It isn't until one reads this that one understands the breadth and scope of her genius, her ability to weave political in with art and beauty. The poems are marvels, each one of them.
