About the Author
BIO Muriel Angelil started to write in the 1980’s encouraged by her late husband Joseph Godwin who also was a writer. She has written poetry, children’s stories a journal and technical articles on Expressive Art Therapy. Recently she started to attend an Open Mic in Newburyport and her journey as a poet was launched. In a year, she has written over one hundred poems describing her relationships with family members, lovers and friends and her personal thoughts on death, love, dance and travels. Angelil has also published a memoir: Back to the Past, A Daughter of the Nile; which describes her life in Alexandria, Egypt and her reasons for leaving and settling in the USA. Muriel Angelil is also an artist and has been exhibiting her paintings, monotypes and sculptures for the last thirty years. Her artworks show abstracted figurative shapes inspired by her life: including dancers, horses, little girls, women, and men. Other works are simply abstracts inspired by her love of music and especially jazz. All her art shows a sense of movement and color just like her life.

In Close Embrace, by Muriel Angelil, is a heartwarming collection of poems in which the writer's innocent simplicity reveals a provocative existential depth. Angelil's fluent, readable poetic lines capture the significance found in everyday details through a thrift of language. Her narratives take surprising twists and turns with fresh perspectives that often make me smile, like these lines from her poem "Canoe Ride: "...beneath the bridge/teaching you how to ululate/our voices echo in unison/water lilies smiling at us/some too shy, leaves closed..." In Close Embrace will be a friendly companion on anyone's poetry bookshelf.

Embracing Words

These poems are like ordinary photographs but ones with the added dimensions of compassion, humor, and insight into the human condition. I am reminded of a woman looking all around her, up and down and sideways, past and future and present, just before leaping into the great unknown. You can almost hear her reading each word clearly, fearlessly, wonderfully in that blank space of a page. Brava!
