Not your typical poetry book

What a powerful book. This is a unique collection of memories, battlefield snapshots of reality, the reality of war. This is a collection of the images carried by the men and women who were there. From the words of Vietnam veterans, Ray Whitaker uses his exceptional writing ability to paint vivid word images that define the human reality all warfare. This is neither a glorification of battle, nor a protest against war; it is a plea for understanding and acknowledgment of these warriors and the price they paid.

This is a book that can help families and friends of veterans from not only the Vietnam War but of all conflicts understand what the reality of conflict is like. This collection of intense poetry, written by a skilled listener and a gifted poet, could be on the reading list for students, and an entire population who still has no appreciation or comprehension of the ‘Nam War. Ray Whitaker uses their own words to provide well deserved acknowledgement of their sacrifices. I strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand and honor those who have served.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Warrior Joy", a collection of poems accompanied by inspirational art work. The collaboration of the writer and several talented artists resulted in a lovely experience for this reader! I found this journal empowering, with words of wisdom, healing and love, tucked into each poem. 

I found Warrior Joy to take me on a search for inner-Joy - and in doing so, it read much like a search of one's own heart and the untangling of many emotions that live there.

From the Author
The Warrior Journal project comes directly from a fiery place of inspiration, married with the spirit of collaboration. The idea came after I attended one of my continuing education classes in Sedona. I stood up and read a poem I had written called God On The Plane to the 220 participants and when I was finished, a poet was born. Since that day last year, over 50 poems have come through me and onto the page, some of which you will find here in this magnificent book/journal! I have used writing to heal myself since I was fifteen. My journals were the place I found myself, healed my pain and planned out my dreams. The Warrior Journals are a place for you to do that, and I hope you enjoy them!

About the Author
Laura Probert, MPT has practiced physical therapy over 20 years. She is the owner of Bodyworks Physical Therapy and the author of "Warrior Love, A Journal To Inspire Your Fiercely Alive Whole Self," "Living, Healing and Taekwondo," and "The Bodyworks Healing Handbook" and a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Through her brand of physical therapy, her writing and the martial arts, she hopes to inspire people to find their own inner warrior. Her freelance work has appeared in Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine, Black Belt Magazine and BeWell Magazine. She is currently working on her second poetry art journal with plans for a third. When she is not with clients or writing poems you will probably find her with her kids, dogs or a horse. Filled with beautiful poetry and artwork, you also have plenty of big pages to write, doodle, draw and paint your own artistic creations. I also have Warrior Love and use it regularly to record my thoughts, color and record ideas. I love these beautiful journals.

Informative read! Don't buy a boat before reading this book . It covers about everything you need about researching, selecting and purchasing a sailboat. A friend of mine bought a catamaran a few years ago and, even though he was happy with his purchase, wished he had a resource (such as this book) describing the entire purchasing process. There were several major issues that he didn't pay attention to with his first purchase. Notably, he ended up choosing the wrong surveyor and rushed the purchase. Now that he is ready for an upgrade, I am glad that I stumbled upon this book for him. We both appreciate the conversational nature of this book (it's actually a pretty fun read), as well as the thorough step-by-step layout that makes it accessible everyone, regardless of how much they know (or do not know) about boating. A+

I got this book cause I am a dreamer. I would love to have my own boat at some point! Even though I don't know too much about it and I don't have enough savings yet, I decided to embrace the idea of having a boat and got this book.

An excellent collection of thought-provoking poems: I love how the author takes a very unsentimental approach to her faith and her journey in it. These are not your typical "fluffy clouds tell me God loves me!" poems which one finds these days when you go looking for Christian poetry, they were clearly written at the foot of the Cross. Anyone who finds their own personal cross weighing heavily on their shoulders or who finds their faith gives them more questions than answers will find consolation while reading them.

Straight Out Scribes...what an appropriate name for a truly lyrical duo. There is symmetry in the poems by each as their experiences resonate with the shared experience of a black woman in a world that was not created for her. Mother and daughter poets...a unique concept that allows the reader insight into the differences and similarities of their experiences. They live in the same U.S.A., but it's different place for each one of them. Their poems take me inch by inch to the top of the rollercoaster, but several drop me weightless into new meaning and understanding. One such poem, "Pieces lost" by Staajabu especially resonates with one of the finest descriptions of the personal meaning of things lost that I have ever read in prose or poetry. Read this volumn of poems for some of the finest poetry around, but be aware that memories evoked will draw you back to to read and reread this book.

Aficionados of Spoken Word poetry that is socially and ethnically conscious will not be disappointed by this book. They are a mother-daughter duo who are second to none. They are true exemplars of oral performance artists. My question, however, is this: When, when, when are their many devoted admirers going to be treated to video clips of their performances (hint, hint, hint)? We East Coasters are suffering here ... we want to SEE and HEAR our beautiful and multi-talented sistuhs do their literary thang. Sina la zaidi!

Their poems are so full of power and history and love and respect and beauty and knowledge and rememberence and compassion and . . . common sense, they made me shout for joy. They connected me to my ancestors, stirred up old childhood memories and refreshed my mind of all kinds of events and all kinds of people, past and present. They restored my soul!

Nancy Kuhl is the author of the poetry collections SUSPEND (2010) and THE WIFE OF THE LEFT HAND (20017), both from Shearsman Books, and ERICA VAN HORN: THE BOOK REMEMBERS EVERYTHING (Granary Books and Coracle Press, 2011). Her chapbook In the Arbor was winner of the Wick Poetry Chapbook Prize and was published by Kent State University Press. These are courageous, gorgeous poems that tell of longing, life, violence, and the redemptive, transformative power of language and poetry.

"...I am
almost pinned by skeletal light
by cross-pane shadows the hour
at least is set steady stretched
tight and unyielding by sure strokes
