V.S. Chochezi, Ed.D is a poet, part-time professor, mosaic artist, consultant trainer, leadership development coordinator and facilitator. Staajabu is a writer, activist, organizer and graphic artist. Together they form Straight Out Scribes and have now published seven collections of poetry books and two poetry cds.

Straight Out Scribes...what an appropriate name for a truly lyrical duo. There is symmetry in the poems by each as their experiences resonate with the shared experience of a black woman in a world that was not created for her. Mother and daughter poets...a unique concept that allows the reader insight into the differences and similarities of their experiences. They live in the same U.S.A., but it's different place for each one of them. Their poems take me inch by inch to the top of the rollercoaster, but several drop me weightless into new meaning and understanding. One such poem, "Pieces lost" by Staajabu especially resonates with one of the finest descriptions of the personal meaning of things lost that I have ever read in prose or poetry. Read this volumn of poems for some of the finest poetry around, but be aware that memories evoked will draw you back to to read and reread this book.

This book is an ink and paper representation of the oral dexterity of two spoken word divas of African-Centered Conscious Spoken Word, Bi Staajabu and Dr. Sananaa Chochezi. Aficionados of Spoken Word poetry that is socially and ethnically conscious will not be disappointed by this book. They are a mother-daughter duo who are second to none. They are true exemplars of oral performance artists. My question, however, is this: When, when, when are their many devoted admirers going to be treated to video clips of their performances (hint, hint, hint)? We East Coasters are suffering here ... we want to SEE and HEAR our beautiful and multi-talented sistuhs do their literary thang. Sina la zaidi!

Staajabu and Dr. V. S. Chochezi took my breath away, again, with their words! Their poems are so full of power and history and love and respect and beauty and knowledge and rememberence and compassion and . . . common sense, they made me shout for joy. They connected me to my ancestors, stirred up old childhood memories and refreshed my mind of all kinds of events and all kinds of people, past and present. They restored my soul!
