He delivers the complex nature of our relationships with strangers, colleagues, acquaintances, loved ones and the divine is a way that is pure in their interconnectedness and interdependence. Much like his other works, such as Resisting Elegy and Why Not Take All of Me, God's Bicycle is honest, open and unfettered by assumption. It is a collection you will pick up again and again, and like any great poet's work, you will find different meanings each time. Truly a work of art worthy of praise.

This is a wonderful book to pick up again and again

I don't read books of poetry from the beginning on through. I crash about reading what strikes my whim justifying it with the idea that's how we interact with people--not necessarily in a linear fashion, but diving in and out creating our own coherence. This is the same fashion I read Still Burning, though I often read some poems in the linear fashion, or I made up my own groupings. Either way, all of it works. Alinda takes your emotions along for her ride and you don't know where you're going to end up until you're there. This is a wonderful book to pick up again and again, because you could experience a poem a new way on a new day. I'm not including an end date on Goodreads for just that reason--I'm not done and doubt I can be.

About the Author
Ross Gay is the author of two previous collections, Against Which and Bringing the Shovel Down. His poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, Orion, the Sun, and elsewhere.  He is an associate professor of poetry at Indiana University and teaches in Drew University’s low-residency MFA program in poetry. He also serves on the board of the Bloomington Community Orchard.

Gorgeous book through and through

While tons of other poets are slaving away in their Towers of I-Don't-Care and Despair-Is-All-There-Is, kissing ass like crazy, Ross Gay is outside getting his hands dirty with plants and words and listening to the birds and the sky. These poems have life, and thus the reader feels more alive after having read them. He sings songs of love and healing while staying true to the tough parts of life. Definitely worth the hype, and he's giving me hope for poetry.

Leslea Newman has a gift for writing poems that are crisply constructed and packed with emotion. The poems in this book are both moving and memorable. About the Author
Stephanie Nelson (PhD. Chicago) is Associate Professor of Classics at Boston University and has written numerous works on Hesiod and Aristophanes.

Richard Caldwell (deceased) was Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California. His PhD was from the University of Texas and he specialized in both the Classics and psychoanalysis. He wrote the popular translation of Hesiod's "Theogony" and a prose translation of Vergil's "Aeneid".

Speaking truth to Perses

"Works and Days" was the purpose, or rather, reading the agricultural material from the time of Hesiod. This Stephanie Nelson translation is like getting a Ferrari for the price of a used Ford. More specifically,
-- the book includes Theogony as well as Works and Days
-- it comes with erudite, enriching essays on both books
-- the translation is poetry, not prose, but poetry true to the original texts we have
-- the translations include witty, wise, informative footnotes on every page, like a conversation with the translator
-- through this, I've met for the first time a feisty, fascinating man who gets lost in lesser translations. Who could resist, after the invocation to the Muses who dwell on Pieria in fine style the fine blunt, "For mine, I would speak truth to Perses."
(Perses his brother, that fool, to whom Hesiod gives an earful.
The Theogony covers the history of the gods as Hesiod knew or embellished it, which even a thousand years later was the generally accepted version, one that imspired scores of writers then and now. The Woks and Days is sheer delight, including in almost Lucretian style (Lucretius came long after Hesiod) beliefs and opinions about much concerning life and making a living, including some keen but apprehensive words on sailing the wine-dark sea.
A lovely gift from Nelson and essayist Caldwell---and the deities which almost miraculously have preserved Homer and Hesiod for our times and beyond. If you can afford only one translation of Hesiod, this is it!

This is a great book to show anybody who thinks poetry is an airy-fairy, self-indulgent, navel-gazing undertaking written by and for people who never get out of their room. This is a work of rare passion and power. Urrea engages the world with keen observation, compassion and humor, with narrative force worthy of a great novelist (for Urrea, author of "The Hummingbird's Daughter" and "Into the Beautiful North," surely is one) and the lyricism of a great poet -- a rare combination. Treat yourself and buy it. You'll be entertained, you'll be moved, and you'll learn a few things about the world and how to live in it and about the world of the spirit. And, oh yeah, it just might remind you of what you once knew and then probably forgot about poetry -- that against a hard world it's a weapon of beauty and transformative power.

Outstanding poetry for real people

This is one of my all-time favorite poetry books. The poems demonstrate a great range of ideas. Two of my favorites are "Help Me" and "Song of Praise" but there isn't a bad one in the bunch. A few of the poems are in Spanish, but with a little help, you can kind of figure out what they mean--but the way they sound in Spanish is so much more dramatic. Funny, sad, pensive, strident - the book has so much to offer that it's definitely worth reading more than once. I've shared it with several people who have all enjoyed it as much as I did.

I love this poetry book

I love this poetry book! It had such great variation of deepness and thought. My favorite poem is titled Unknown Sun. The words themselves and the way they flowed together really touched me and allowed me to daydream about life. I even got a little teary-eyed reading it over a second time. Overall a wonderful poetry read that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys beautiful writings of everyday life and beyond.

Highly recommend!

I highly recommend "The Last Days of Winter," by Jacob Salzer. In today's fast-paced world, few of us stop long enough to take in the beauty around us. What we pass by, however, Salzer observes, and those observations are delightfully captured in his first published collection of poetry. My favorite poem in the collection is titled "Names," in which Salzer explores the human practice of affixing labels to our environment ("we've paved new streets to name them..."), so as to help us navigate the unfamiliar ("...helping us turn when we know it's time"). For me, the poem is a reminder that, try as we might to study, categorize, and understand the world around us, nature is bigger than humanity--it was here long before we began giving names to its expressions, and it will be here long after those names are no longer spoken. But "Names" is only one poem in a very impressive debut collection. I look forward to reading more of Salzer's work!

About the Author
A recipient of three Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships of Literature, Barbara Crooker is the author of five books, including Gold; More; Line Dance, winner of the Paterson Prize for Literary Excellence; and Radiance, finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize. Her poems have won the WB Yeats Society of New York Award, the Thomas Merton Poetry of the Sacred Award, and the New Millennium Writing’s Y2K competition. Her work appears in a variety of literary journals and anthologies, including Common Wealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania and The Bedford Introduction to Literature.

Selected Poems by Barbara Crooker is a “must have” for anyone who delights in language, form, and extraordinary insight. Writing about a life not so different
from ours, she manages with uncanny clarity to see into her subject as many of us do not, illuminating essence whether family, seasons, gardening, travel, food,
or loss. Her work is rooted firmly in life, and Crooker lives her life fully.
From “ At the Cimitière de Monmartre,” for example, after strolling among the graves of the famous, she and her husband find a wrought iron bench, enjoy a feast of camembert, pain de compagne, a kilo of cherries, “when for a sweet moment, I loved you so completely, /when I die, I want our ashes to mingle; bury us in earth,/plant a rose bush/ etc.” Love blossoms even in the cemetery. Or consider
the poems for her son David who has autism. Crooker writes compassionately but realistically. In poems such as “The Mother of a Handicapped Child Dreams of Respite,” she lists all the ways she could escape, then tucks in the penultimate line
“ I will dance in satin slippers at my broken boy’s wedding” followed by “I will drive clear to the Pacific and never come back.” or “ Driving Under the Clerestory of Leaves” where Crooker describes driving David to school, explains how he is developmentally delayed, mildly retarded, how she waits for him, tries to write, “turn straw into gold,” and speaks of the beauty of the “mixed hardwood in full conflagration. And the last three lines: The architect who made these trees was sleeping when he made this boy. And my heart, like the leaves, burns and burns.

This collection of 101 poems taken from 10 chapbooks and including the new later poems, perhaps more meditative and reflective, taking an account of a life as in the last poem, “ The Mothers,” from the profane “to the sacred, the opening between two worlds, the way we all came in, part of the wheel, the hoop, the great turning. “

New Collection from Barbara Crooker: Yes!

From the first poem to the last, Selected Poems is a gorgeous collection of Barbara Crooker's work. Crooker is one of the most observant poets writing today, producing exquisite poems that celebrate the small details most of us overlook. In poems that describe elements of everyday life, from grated cheese to fried eggplant, migrating hawks to multiflora roses, small upstate towns to the Montmartre in Paris, she shows us how each small thing offers meaning to the joys and sorrows of life and death. Who else sees the erotic in a jar of homemade strawberry jam, writes a crown of sonnets about writing a crown of sonnets, and helps us see the truth in even the mundane? "But aren't we all refugees, searching for our lives, / and don't we all become orphans in the end" she asks. And she provides answers that may or may not be comforting, in image after image, poem after poem.

In her poem Obbligato, Barbara Crooker writes “How we forget to be grateful.” Reading her Selected Poems reminded me of how grateful I am for the talents of this poet—her humor, her at times brutal honesty, her ability to find the unexpected yet perfect word, her patented after-all-these–years-we-are-are-still-in-love poems, her ability to mourn and not lose hope. All of these traits and more are evident in spades in this wonderful collections of poems from four decades of her many chapbooks and several uncollected poems. There are poems in this collection that any Crooker fan will recognize as old friends, poems like Ordinary Life and The Lost Children. There are also new treasures like Sadness Falls. Those new and old to Crooker’s work should place this volume in their shopping cart posthaste.
