The Collected Poems of C.S. Lewis: A Critical EditionFrom Kent State University Press

Although C. S. Lewis is best known for his prose and for his clear, lucid literary criticism, Christian apologetics, and imaginative Ransom and Narnia stories, he considered himself a poet for the first two and a half decades of his life. Owen Barfield recalls that anyone who met Lewis as a young man in the early 1920s at Oxford University quickly learned he was one whose ruling passion was to become a great poet. At that time if you thought of Lewis you automatically thought of poetry.

The Collected Poems of C. S. Lewis offers readers, for the first time, a one-volume collection of Lewis's poetry, including many poems that have never appeared in print. With the poems arranged in chronological order, this volume allows readers the opportunity to compare the poetry Lewis was writing while he was also writing his fiction and nonfiction prose.

Beginning with his earliest lyric poems from 1907, The Collected Poems of C. S. Lewis follows Lewis's efforts to write long, narrative poems, which were particularly influenced by Norse mythology. His outburst of lyric poetry as a young man in the trenches during World War I culminates in his first published work, Spirits in Bondage (1919), followed by his most ambitious narrative poem, Dymer (1926). Both volumes afford unique insights into Lewis the atheist. After his conversion to Christianity in 1930, Lewis wrote a collection of sixteen religious lyrics that he included in The Pilgrim's Regress (1933); as a group, these are considered among his best poems. Until his death in 1963, Lewis continued writing and publishing poetry, often appearing in journals and magazines under his pseudonym N. W., shorthand for the Anglo-Saxon nat whilk, [I know] not whom. As a whole, these latter poems are either occasional verses, burlesques, and erudite satires or they are contemplative poems musing upon the human condition and its pain, joy, suffering, pride, love, doubt, and faith.

The Collected Poems of C. S. Lewis demonstrates a dedicated, determined, and passionate poet at work and illustrates the degree and depth to which poetry shaped Lewis s literary, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual life.

A Must Title for All Fans of Lewis Poetry!
By William OFlaherty
Dr. Don King is an establish authority on the poetry of C.S. Lewis. This book contains nearly all of his poetry in one volume. I say nearly all because King, the editor of this volume states in the introduction that this nearly 500 page book presented about 95% of his poetry. The material is arranged in chronological order and the original versions are given (as they were first published). There are also many other useful features that I'll let other point out.

Personally I am not as interested in this style of writing from Lewis, but I recognize it as a very important part of his life.

For those interested in learning more about the book you might consider listening to an interview I did with the editor about it at the end of 2014. Finally, the publisher did send me a review copy, but it was with the expectation that I would offer my own views of the work and there was no pressure to leave a positive review.

Interesting to own for the HUGE C.S. Lewis fan, but not all the poetry is great
By Stuart Dunn
When I think back on my childhood, there are few authors that I remember and even fewer that I still read. C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia had a great impact on both my life and taste in literature and is an author I still find myself reading. As I grew older, I tackled his more adult works, both fiction (The Screwtape Letters) and nonfiction (Mere Christianity). It is only recently that I discovered that Mr. Lewis was also a poet. Don W. King compiled almost all of Lewis' poetry in the nearly 500 page volume entitled The Collected Poems of C.S. Lewis. The poems are arranged chronologically from 1907 to 1963 with a section devoted to undated poetry, and include war poetry; spiritual poetry; and even epic poetry of Norse persuasion. There are even some very short poems in this collection, like the following:

She was delicately, beautifully made,
So small, so unafraid,
Till the bomb came
(Bombs are the same,
Delicately, beautifully made.)

This short, but sad poem was written in 1942, which was when World War II had just begun. One of his longer works is entitled Dymer. It is composed of eight cantos and is clearly modeled on some of the greats likes Homer or Milton. It was interesting, but one can see this lacked the Christian themes we are used to see in his work, because it was written long before his conversion. I admit that I did not read all of this poetry, because some of it just bogged me down. The introduction by the editor, Don W. King, does a great service of placing proper perspective on the poetry of C.S. Lewis and why it is important. I believe this work would best be read with another of King's work, C.S. Lewis, Poet. What I did take away from this work was that our plans don't always align with God's plans. By all accounts, C.S. Lewis dreamed of being remembered as one of the greatest poets ever, and it is clear that he poured his heart and soul into his poetry. However, no one today remembers C.S. Lewis for his poetry but instead for his prose, and there is no shame in that at all. If you are interested in poetry and want to understand the context of C.S. Lewis, then I'd recommend this book if you can get it at a reasonable price.

Caida libre/Free Fall, by Tina Escaja

In awarding the book-length poem Caída Libre (Free Fall) the Government of the Canary Islands’ prestigious 2003 Dulce María Loynaz International Poetry Prize, the jury highlighted the “authenticity and force in the language”, reflecting the process of a pregnancy with a “hard, steeled language,” a language, though, “not incisive, but very realistic and extraordinarily beautiful.” “In a masterful form,” the poem, “passes from the plane of the intimate to that of the almost-epic, using a figure not found commonly in poetry: the chronicle of a pregnancy.”
(Press notes from December 10th, 2003). But Caída Libre registers much more beyond that chronicle. Conception, delivery, and maternity unite in an epic of the derangement and celebration at the end of the millennium in New York City. And then shortly afterwards, the catastrophe of the Twin Towers with its agony and irreversible transformation of values: the fall of the West’s formulation in the previous millennium. Caída Libre is a brilliant and fundamental book to understand ourselves in our current century, in its conflicts and atrocities, but also in its soundness and revelations. The importance of its read is amplified by its Hispanic perspective and gender, and this bilingual edition opens up its accessibility. The book is currently being taught at universities around the globe, and has been included in important critical studies.

Worth every word!
By yolanda warren

A book to be read many times in English or in Spanish. Powerful, strong, with stabbing joy and pain, like giving birth. A storm of feelings with New York in the background as a wounded giant. Brimming with intimate and nontransferable but, at the same time, universal perceptions. Contemporary poetry in its fullness.

By Salvador A. Oropesa
Excellent book. A poetic journey that transcends from the intimate to the epic in New York City at the end of the 20th Century. Pregnancy and delivery never had a more surprising, raw and painful, yet celebratory journey among skyscrapers within the apocalyptic setting of the end of the millennium in New York City. Told from a visionary sense of sorrow and illumination, the book culminates in the falling of the Twin Towers. Truly sublime.

La Noche Tuvo Miedo / Night Was Afraid to Fall, by Fr. Orlando J. Addison

La Noche Tuvo Miedo / Night Was Afraid to Fall is a bilingual Spanish/English poetry book dedicated to Jeannette Kawas, an Honduran environmentalist assassinated in the mid 90’s for protecting the coastland on the northern part of the country. The author uses the ocean as the central theme to share his message and his own experience. M. Jane Roberts, a poet who translated the poems from Spanish to English, says “I have never been to Honduras. And yet, Fr. Addison’s images are so vivid that I can practically smell the sea air, feel the sand between my toes and hear the wind in the palm leaves when I read them.” Marco Tulio del Arca, a renowned Honduran poet, has this to say about Fr. Addison’s poetry “Orlando surprises us with his fresh style and with the rhythm of his words. These words are profound and serious, couch in a language that is clean, calm, direct and convincing. His poetry has the flavor of sun and sea.” And M.L. Liebler author of “Wide Awake in Someone Else’s Dream refers to Fr. Addison’s poetry as “a sublime contemplation of all that is good in this world. His images are fresh and moving, and his poems bring new insight into areas of the everydayness of our lives."

WRITTEN FROM THE HEART
By S. F Gulvezan
Orlando Addison's first collection of poetry, ably translated by M. Jane Roberts in this bi-lingual edition, teems with the vibrant urgency of life forcing its tendrils up into the rich soil of human experience. Honduran by birth, Episcopalian priest by vocation, Father Addison currently resides in Florida. His poetry evokes a lush tropical sensuousness -- "...Where clocks/arrest time;/where, in the silence of the night,/one hears whispering/in the palms." -- combined with a knowledge of human experience: "The melancholy voice/of the banana company whistle/sounded in the crowd/alerting people.". Father Addison shows us both sides of the ever-teetering balancing equation between the natural world and the world of humanity: sometimes night is afraid to fall, but sometimes it bursts forth in glory. Full of beautifully written poems, this work would be a great addition to anyone's poetry collection.

A captivating journey
By Neena Roumell
At times surreal, the powerful imagery was compelling in Fr. Orlando Addison's collection of poetry. I was swept into his sensual world from beginning to end in one sitting. Subtle modulations between the two worlds (natural and metaphysical), made me bolt upright in my chair. The exquisite shifts in the flow of intensity are superbly captured by the translator, M.Jane Roberts.

Life's Enigmatic Journey
By Joy Butterfly
This is an elegant small book of poems written by the Reverend Father Orlando J. Addison, an Episcopal priest. I loved this book with its stunning imagery, and small gems of beauty. It is a work of intense pathos and poignancy as in the poem, "My Lover, My Friend" and "Wound" but one also that expresses a joy and playfulness as innocent as a child's as in "The Wind Dances." These lines "The Wind came up at sunset. It played with the palm trees, making them blush. They laughed and flirted with him" are lines that come unbidden to my mind now when I drive along the coast. I found the serious work, after which the book is named, "Night Was Afraid to Fall," dramatic and profound, with a beauty that seers the soul.

Review
“Malone knows what and where he loves while his poems form an intimate geometry of hill, home, flesh and bone, as essential as they are elemental. This work is chiseled.” –Mike Luster, English & Philosophy Professor at Arkansas State University

Love Continually Transforms
By Maureen E. Doallas
In his new collection O (T.S. Poetry Press, 2015), poet Dave Malone charts both physical landscape and seasons of love, revealing how, in the Ozark countryside he calls home, geography figuratively shifts while love continually transforms.

In "We Blossom the World", the first poem in the book's first section "Spring", what Malone's lovers "can't say to each other" finds release through nature's own language—in "forsythia bushing out gold" and "torn-up sky greening into tornado". No matter that "[c]louds shake with gray" ("The Knobby Throat of Spring") or "April wind batters" ("Thunderboomer"), intense love-making ensues, expressing itself in "golden prairie flames, / the timber plain consumed" ("Hips").

In summer, "calves, thighs, shins, / white as cottonwood blossoms" and legs that "hold up the body / that's grown into the body" loved ("Photograph") urge abandon to and in the lovers' oak four-poster, "[his] tongue . . . sweeping low / against [her] flower" ("Silk") until the interminable heat of Ozark August turns even night a "traitor".

By autumn, no calendars need "mark the flutter of romance . . . the flutter of union"; the lovers "sleep beneath the sexed redbuds / purpling like bruises" ("Unmarked"). Their "backs break in loving— / and then the rest . . . " ("Loving"). Absence hollows out before giving way to "a landscape / of cannon and chipped maps and civil war" ("Civil War"), leaving the lovers "at home in frigid water" ("The Deep").

With winter's gloomy arrival, the lovers, "[t]wo poets, . . . try to wrangle language / into feeling" but language "bucks the same // in starts and end stops, promises no forgiveness" ("Language"). Still, there are "[t]iny / bursts of electric lights" in the "dark inside [of] these Ozark knobs" ("Ghosts), hinting of love alive, and efforts "[i]n the finality of midnight [to] break against sleep / and total darkness" reveal at last "the tiny blade / of the new moon" ("New Moon"). With the promising light of that new moon comes the lovers' recognition that "time moves / backwards and forwards";

[. . . ]
Before we can eat brunch,
we are adrift in snow. [. . .]

Before we can speak the language
of knowing each other, the shorthand
for gardening and taking out the glorious trash,
we are dropped on a railroad bed.
Under the blue moon, a locomotive
churns through the pine forest.
Blinded, we weep like newborns
until arms join in the utter, forest dark.
~ "Tiny Machine"

And so life and the love that refreshes and restores it cycle through O, light giving way to hurt giving way to darkness giving way to light.

In the vividly realized geographical and metaphorical landscapes in which he creates his love story — story, not simply a series of individual poems addressing the subject — Malone is unabashed in exalting romantic and physical love. As economical and plain-spoken as they are, his poems never shy from declaring love in its most passionate forms: in flesh and in blood, of body and in spirit.

The poems, however, also speak to what happens when a "gangly" moon "looms as boring as it can get" ("Separation"): the eyes of the lovers dull and words fail and lips become "only a solid line". Sometimes, Malone reminds us realistically, love takes us into "lands unseen"; sometimes, though painfully, it just leaves us a voice that's "small and squeaky" or hands that get "lost / in the emptiness of space."

The geography of passion
By Glynn Young
My first experience with the Ozark Mountains was virtual – a novel called “The Architecture of the Arkansas Ozarks” by the late Donald Harington. It was published in 1975; I read it about 1980 and thought it was hilarious. A few years later, we spent a long weekend in Branson, before it was discovered by all the big name entertainers and when Silver Dollar City and the duck boats were the big attractions.

It was then that I learned about “The Shepherd of the Hills” and the Bald Knobbers, a group of vigilantes who were still fighting the Civil War for the North in the 1880s, their enemy being the Anti-Bald Knobbers, who sided with the south. I also discovered that St. Louis is considered to be in the foothills of the Ozarks, surprising, since the Ozarks are about 100 miles away. And we’ve spent several long weekends at Lake of the Ozarks, created way-back-when by a dam and today a heavy tourist draw from Missouri.

So my knowledge of the Ozarks was essentially limited to what any observant tourist might know. And I didn’t consider the movie “Winter’s Bone” to present an accurate portrayal of life in the Ozarks, either.

I’ve had a different picture of life in the Ozarks, and it’s thanks to Dave Malone’s poetry: “View from the North Ten;” “Under the Sycamore;” “Seasons of Love;” and “Poems to Love, and the Body.” His latest collection, “O: Love Poems from the Ozarks,” includes some of the most vivid love poetry I think I’ve read.

What kept coming to mind as I read it was “The Song of Solomon.” Malone uses a similar kind of imagery, imagery that is both candid and subtle. It is imagery that tells you this is a man deeply and profoundly in love. Consider his poem “Language,” which is ostensibly about poets and writing:

Language
Two poets, we try to wrangle language
into feeling—as lost as fledgling cowboys
locked between two chopped gates
as they slide down onto barebacks
of impossible broncs bent in shocking
iron and man. Language bucks the same
in starts and end stops, promises no forgiveness
to two bards, dropped into knee-high mud,
arms and legs tangled as if one corpse,
quarters dull our eyes, and lips only a solid line
save the glimmer of your bicuspid
(or perhaps mine) in fading rodeo lights.

A lot is happening here, not the least of which is using the imagery of the rodeo cowboy to describe both the writing of language and a love between two poets. Notice what would happen if the very first line was changed to read “We poets try to wrangle language”; the entire meaning would be lost.

That’s how Malone plays with words in O. He says in the introduction that “Many of the poems in this volume were ones I originally sent to Jenni [his wife]. Often, I was the courier, delivering them in shadowy, Ozark night. Other times, my biking messenger, James … brought them to her workplace. Sometimes, a poem rested on our bedside table, ready for us to read together at night.”

The poems of Dave Malone are constructions of beauty, turning the images of the everyday into something wonderful shared between two people, and shared between poet and reader. The poems become part of Malone’s Ozark landscape, not only the local geography but also the geography of passion. The Ozarks must be one interesting place to live.

In awe (and in love) with this collection
By Darrelyn Saloom
O begins with an essay “From the Poet,” which gives insight into Malone’s journey into poetry and his “interesting twists of fate” that led him to his wife, the inspiration of his latest poetry collection set in a fertile landscape.

The author explains, “Given the rich natural world where she and I live, given our roots, it was of course natural that southern Missouri, our hills and hollers, the lake, and our little burg between a pair of Ozark knobs would provide the backdrop for my love poems to her, for this work.”

True to his vision, each poem is planted deep in the Ozarks. But it’s clear from the first “We Blossom the World” that this poet’s word choices paint “The wetness of dew settling on beat-up barns,” and allows witness to “The back forty sinkhole where I drop all my sins against you” (5-7).

No doubt, Dave Malone’s words spring from passion. His poems entice your eyes onto the page, and then he holds you there in awe.

Best poet of the last 50 years!
By Kim Acrylic
This book is full of dark romance, surreal images of brilliant worlds. I adore the echo of old fashioned love poems, and deep moods. First part is poetry, which is wonderfully mastered to perfection, and the second half is lyrics. The lyrics are breathtakingly wonderful, and anyone who loves deeply should read this! Soul its Waiting stays with you long after it's read. Calli, is a genius of words and is now my favorite poet!

We all have value. No matter our age or size, we all have something special to add. Old Red has been serving the community he loves for many years. He puts out fires, responds to accidents, and helps the citizens of his community. When bigger, more modern fire trucks replace him, Old Red doesn't seem to be needed much any longer. See how Old Red and even another friend show that even though they are smaller and much older, they are still an important part of this community. You wouldn't think an rusty old fire engine could teach us all a lesson, but in this whimsically feel-good story, he does just that.

Beautiful lesson about having value also improves language skills.
By DogsMom
I was delighted to win a copy of this book from Goodreads and the author.
It is a beautiful bright shiny red in an easy to hold format.
The pencil drawing illustrations are perfect for this age group.
Even I would like to see if I could draw a truck or the station now.

There is a comfortable rhythm to the dialogue, which rhymes very well.
I liked that there are some more complicated words used.
Besides having a beautiful lesson about having value no matter who else is around, it helps to improve language skills.

This is a book you will not mind reading again and again.

Wonderful Children's Picture Book for boys or girls
By J.N. Henderson
Wonderful Picture book for girls or boys. The story is such a sweet story about an old fire truck who thought he was out of business, never to be used again, but the story shows that there is still value in him. It is such a story of hope.

I was especially entertained by the poetry of the author's writing. I will certainly recommend this book.

Everyday Moments Hold the Most Beauty: A Journey in Poetry and Micropoetry (Volume 1), by Tracy K. Meyerhofer

Micropoetry is a short poetry form, which requires less than 160 characters, including all punctuation and spaces. It is challenging to convey an emotion, or an entire short story, in that small space. It is similar to a photo snapshot or a moment in time. Micropoetry is quick, gets to the point, and does not take a huge chunk of time to enjoy. It is a small bite to savor. It deserves to be recognized as a subcategory of poetry, and should be celebrated for its own nuances and quirks. Hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Exquisite Bon Bons
By Elizabeth Thomas
The poet speaks of her introduction to and affection for micropoetry, and confesses she is a beginner. Nonetheless, the volume is filled with gems and nuggets that illustrate the virtues of this format. The poems speak richly of love and loss, but the brevity is such that they are mysterious, and leave the reader with a pleasant sense of mystery. Her vocabulary is rich and exquisitely chosen; some of the words themselves are a pleasure to the eye and tongue. I can also compare this collection to a box of fine chocolates; some are sweet with cream, others reminiscent of the 85% cocoa variety, while others surprise with a dash of pepper mixed in.

Therigatha: Poems of the First Buddhist Women (Murty Classical Library of India)From Harvard University Press

The Therīgāthā, composed more than two millennia ago, is an anthology of poems in the Pali language by and about the first Buddhist women. These women were therīs, the senior ones, among ordained Buddhist women, and they bore that epithet because of their religious achievements. The poems they left behind are arguably among the most ancient examples of women’s writing in the world and they are unmatched for their quality of personal expression and the extraordinary insight they offer into the lives of women in the ancient Indian past―and indeed, into the lives of women as such.

This new version of the Therīgāthā, based on a careful reassessment of the major editions of the work and printed in the Roman script common for modern editions of Pali texts, offers the most powerful and the most readable translation ever achieved in English.

The Murty Classical Library of India makes available original texts and modern English translations of the masterpieces of literature and thought from across the whole spectrum of Indic languages over the past two millennia in the most authoritative and accessible formats on offer anywhere.

Review
The Therigatha has a lot of claims on our attention. It is among the first poetry of India; among the first poems by women in India; the first collection of women’s literature in the world. But these claims should not obscure its status as poetry. While the poems embody the world-view and morality of early Indian Buddhism, making them invaluable historical documents, they repay the reader’s attention generously. (Neel Mukherjee New Statesman 2015-03-05)

An austere and revelatory compendium of poems composed over two thousand years ago by Buddhist nuns. (Kanish Tharoor Los Angeles Review of Books 2015-04-13)

Therigatha: Poems of the First Buddhist Women is marvelous not only in that it is an archive of poetry in a language no longer in use but also in that it is the world’s first known collection of literary work by women--documenting the aspirations and achievements of women from nearly two thousand years ago. These poems or utterances that introduce their readers to the practice and intricacies of Buddhism also serve as a testament to the multiplicity of faith and cultural experience in the Indian sub-continent. (Pragya Tiwari India at LSE blog)

Therigatha is a collection of Pali poems attributed to the earliest Buddhist nuns. Though it is a part of the major Theravada Buddhist canon and has been well known to scholars for a long time, these beautiful verses haven’t reached the general public who might be interested in Buddhism…We see Buddhists meditating on women’s bodies as they grow old and lose their beauty, but this time the Buddhists in question are women, and their analysis, though rooted in the same assumptions, is markedly different…The poems of the Therigatha are not narratives; rather, they are dialogues, meditations, and songs, and they carry a more intimate tone that is beautifully expressed in Hallisey’s fluid translation. These poems present a cacophony of different voices of women struggling to find themselves in Buddhism against the prevailing assumptions of their day. (Eric M. Gurevitch Public Books)

We can only welcome an undertaking like the Murty Classical Library of India, which intends to inject fresh blood directly into the circulatory system of the English language. Any intelligent reader cannot fail to be favorably impressed in the presence of the variegated offerings of the series’ first titles…The Murty Classical Library offers a surprising array of texts that are in any case capable of broadening the all-too-restricted horizons of the average Western reader. (Roberto Calasso New York Review of Books 2015-09-24)

An Ancient Buddhist Classic In A New Series Of Indian Writing
By Robin Friedman
Many people have learned a great deal through the Loeb Classical Library of Greek and Roman writing. A new series, modeled on the Loeb Classical Library, has the aim of presenting Indian writing to English readers. The series is called the "Murty Classical Library of India" after Rohan Narayana Murty, a PhD in computer science and intellectual polymath, who generously donated money to fund the project. As stated on its Website, the Murty Classical Library "aims to make available the great literary works of India from the past two millennia. Many classic Indic texts have never reached a global audience, while others are becoming increasingly inaccessible even to Indian readers. The creation of a classical library of India is intended to reintroduce these works to a new generation of readers". The works will be drawn from several languages, reflecting India's rich heritage including "Bangla, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Pali, Panjabi, Persian, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu". It is a wonderful project; I wish it and Murty the best in the undertaking.

Among the first publications of the Library is this new translation of the "Therigatha: Poems of the First Buddhist Women." I had read some of the "Therigatha" in a different translation several years ago in a Buddhist Sutta Studies group. I was glad to see this new edition and to learn about the series. The work is beautifully arranged and easy to use. Charles Hallisey, Senior Lecturer on Buddhist Literature at Harvard University, translated the work from the original Pali, wrote an insightful introduction, and prepared useful notes to the poems. The English translations of the individual poems are given on the right-hand side of the page spread while the Pali text, in Roman script, is given on the left-hand side. The translations are clear, simple, and eloquent.

The Therigatha is part of a series of Buddhist Scripture known as the Pali Canon. The Therigatha is unusual in that it is in the words of early Buddhist nuns who sought and achieved Enlightenment. The poems are from women in all walks of life in ancient India. The speakers are young and old, rich and poor, single women, wives, and prostitutes. They share in common a desire to follow the Buddha's teaching and to renounce the world of change, flux and the everyday. As one of the speakers, a nun named Rohini, says:

"Those who have gone forth
are from various families and from various regions
and still they are friendly with each other --
that is the reason why
ascetics are so dear to me."

In their poems, the nuns often give their reasons for abandoning lay life in favor of the Holy Life. Some of these reasons are surprisingly materialistic as one nun remembers her difficulty in getting enough to eat as she walked the streets. Others reflect on their realization of impermanence, on the death of loved ones, and, most often, on the unsatisfactory character of sexuality and of following one's impulses. Whatever the initial impetus, the women whose poems are given in this collection all have achieved Enlightenment, some after many years of effort and some after only days or weeks. The nuns talk about their background and about the joy they have attained in Enlightenment and in self-conquest. Some of the poems are doctrinal but the majority are individual and personal. They offer a sense of immediacy. The poems reject sensuality and the pleasures of the flesh, but in some of the longer works these pleasures receive a full and perhaps frank description.

The poems are in a variety of formats. Some are only in the voice of the particular nun. In others the woman speaks in dialogue with the Buddha, with Mara -- the tempter -- or with another person. In other poems, the compilers of the anthology offer a comment in their own voice. The poems are largely grouped by length. They begin with poems consisting of a single verse and work through to a poem of about forty verses and to a "great chapter" which is even longer. The lengthier poems tend to be more elaborate both in biography and in doctrinal teachings. The notes at the end of the volume offer a summary of the life of each speaker and offer short summaries of doctrinal teachings.

As Hallisey says in his introduction, it is valuable to try to approach the "Therigatha" without preconceptions, whether the preconceptions are derived from earlier Buddhist study or from contemporary views of what a Scriptural text based on the voices of women should say. The Buddhist theris -- senior nuns who had achieved Enlightenment -- in this collection differ from what modern readers might want to find in them in their views of sexuality, gender equality, and other matters. An important value of this collection is to understand people and women who are greatly different from oneself and to find what spiritually brings them joy. This is a beautiful collection of poems which will allow the reader to see himself or herself differently than he or she did before.

In a short poem of one verse, for example, a nun named Mutta reflects on her name.

"The name I am called by means freed
and I am quite free, well-free from three crooked things,
mortar, pestle, and husband with his own crooked thing.
I am freed from birth and death,
what leads to rebirth has been rooted out."

In another poem, a nun named Soma has a dialogue with the tempter. Mara says:

"It is hard to get to the place that sages want to reach,
it's not possible for a woman,
especially not one with only two fingers' worth of wisdom."

Soma replies:

"What does being a woman have to do with it?
What counts is that the heart is settled
and that one sees what really is.

What you take as pleasures are not for me,
the mass of mental darkness is split open.
Know this, evil one, you are defeated, you are finished."

I think the best way to study Buddhism remains to read the original texts. This new translation of the "Therigatha" will appeal to those readers with a strong interest in Buddhism. More broadly, the Murty Classical Library will appeal to readers who wish to broaden their spiritual and intellectual horizons by reading works which are too-little known in the West. I look forward to reading further books in this series.
