A JOURNEYING SONG

In formal terms, this is a five star review of Enchanting the Shadowlands, a book of numinous poems and short stories by Lorna Smithers. She describes it as “gathered from my local landscape in response to an imperative from a Brythonic god called Gwyn ap Nudd”. If you have any interest in the lingering subtle resonance of the old Celtic and pre-Celtic world in parts of England like the poet’s native northwest, you will appreciate this volume. If you have any interest in ‘awen’ as an inspirational force or creative current, and what it is to be ‘awenydd’, you will appreciate this volume. If you have any interest in poetry and landscape, or what is now called psycho-geography, you are likely to appreciate this volume. I strongly recommend this book.

More deeply, I am hoping in a small way to share something of the magic of the work as I have experienced it. I find that the best way in is to say that, for me, the resonance of the project, its feeling-tone, can be found in the first two verses of ‘A Journeying Song’, one of the later poems in the collection.

1: Horse and Hound

She will carry me

down invisible horse paths.

He will lead us

to invisible lands.

She will carry me

beyond the stolen skyline.

He will lead us

to where horizons end.

2: The Dreaming Land

The dream is not a dream

it is the life force of the land.

A living memory,

it is the dawn. It is the damned.

The dream is not a sleep.

It is a wakefulness

of past people and their dreams.

It is mistakes and shining laughter.

When I read these lines, I can feel myself riding the mare who will “carry me down invisible horse paths”, led (in my mind’s eye) by a large and shaggy hound. I can easily accept that, surrendering to the instinctive wisdom of these animal powers, I might find myself beyond a “broken skyline” at a place where “horizons end”. I can settle into the felt apprehension of a Dreaming Land where the dream is not a dream, but “the life force of the land, a living memory” and a “wakefulness of past people and their dreams”. The words are a portal to the living reality of the experience itself. In that sense, these two brief verses stand as a microcosm of the whole book.

Peneverdant/Penwortham, the locality described, is a watery place. Its first human inhabitants are called “The Dwellers in the Water Country”, drawn by the obvious attractions of auroch and deer and also by destiny and “the dream of a bard”.

They came with the splash of oars

and the steady splash of feet

drawn by auroch, deer and destiny,

the dream of a bard

who saw the green hill rising

from a wilderness of carr and marsh.

The awenydd poet’s own seership, her own process of inspired and connected reaching back, is caught in her ‘Prayer for Netholme’.

I write this prayer for the White One

Who loaned to me a mare of mist,

Led me across the marsh of time

And granted me the seer’s gift.

For later periods, the poetry is sometimes dialogical with older texts – such as the Domesday Survey of 1086, or James Flockhart’s ‘De Mowbray:A legend of Penwortham’. The latter is referenced in in ‘St. Mary’s Well, Twilight’ – a poem that also includes finely wrought observation of nature and the meaning it makes for the observer/the observer makes for it.

The setting sun is casting his vast aura

With a majesty I never dreamt him capable of

Enflaming clouds in luminescent orange and red,

Purple like mountains behind the trees.

The birds are singing as if it is their last dusk song.

I enlist bold robin, blackbird and little wren …

As if this is the evening of all evenings

And will be their last so better make it their best.

It is hard to write freshly about sunsets, though I do think this is well-managed even in the first four lines, especially through bringing in a delighted shift in the observer’s perception, and then going on to dare purple poetry. But what makes this section of the poem for me is the succeeding lines, which create a foreground for the majestic sunset background through the activity of the birds and their commitment to Being while it lasts.

Throughout the book we are aware of the interweaving of two worlds. This is done particularly well in the stories, which are every bit as inspired as the poetry. I was especially moved by the last, called ‘The Brown-Eared Hound: Rivington, October 31st. 1917’. It concerns sudden, shocking bereavement and also a direct experience of Gwyn’s wild hunt. I could almost see a novel, or at any rate novella, in this story – bringing together the world of Wilfrid Owen, D.H Lawrence and Virginia Wolf with that of living Brythonic myth. At the same time the piece as written did everything it needed to.

I don’t think it is possible to do this volume justice in a single review. It’s hard, with poetry. But I've tried to say what most impressed me, and I thoroughly recommend this book.

The best book on John Muir you will read

I have just finished reading John Muir by Mary Colwell. Her great talent is to take what could be a dry and "worthy" subject and create a real page turner. Her experience in BBC television and radio story telling shines through as she ends each chapter with an intriguing cliff hanger ( something evidently Muir enjoyed doing in the literal sense!)

You can hear Mary's voice throughout the book, quietly coaxing us to consider things in the natural world that she is passionate about.

Her concluding thoughts are incisive as she shows how Muir's view of the world is so relevant today.

A fresh perspective on Sylvia Plath

I was able to snag a copy of this book at a Tarot workshop in Indianapolis a couple months ago. What an interesting book! Drawing from biographical sources and Plath’s own journals, Julia Gordon-Bramer uncovers the hidden links between Tarot/mysticism and Plath’s “Ariel” poems, bringing to light a facet of Plath's work that has received little, if any, attention until now. This book is packed with information, but none of it is extraneous. The analysis and discussion of Plath's poems from this perspective showcases a part of that famous author’s world that has been seldom-discussed by other Plath scholars, but which was obviously hugely influential in her writing. The many links pointed out by Gordon-Bramer are both uncanny and entertaining, and references to the Tarot and mysticism are clearly explained and should be easily understandable for those without prior knowledge of these subjects.

My only criticism is that the Ariel poems are not included in this book, which made it somewhat difficult to follow how Gordon-Bramer unpacks the poems and ties particular words and lines to the Tarot (I’m assuming it’s a licensing issue for the Plath poems). Aside from that, I would consider this a must-read for Plath lovers, as well as anyone with an interest in the Tarot or mysticism.

I thought this text tackled the very difficult subject material with grace and eloquence. I think it is important to read the first section titled “What set me going”, (which is a fun play on words referencing Plath’s first poem, and in a sense all of our first steps into reality (more on that later)) in order to fully grasp the type of text and type of person you are dealing with. The thing this section makes clear is that Julia is a very unique individual with a very unique skill set that allowed for these epiphanies to take place. You also get the sense that this book is going to be different than other academic texts. There are the usual elements: hours upon hours of research, citations, connections that can be traced with a clear paper trail. These elements are very passionately and professionally covered. Then there are the unusual elements: intuition, meditation, mysticism, etc. These are the elements that make some staunch academics uncomfortable. These are also the elements that make this book, and its author, thrive. The next section, “Author’s Notes on How to Read these Interpretations”, is also important because it lays out the way each chapter works. I think the organization of these chapters in integral in the understanding of the book, and one of the strongest stylistic choices. Each chapter begins with a picture of the corresponding Tarot card, and then is broken down into six “mirrors” of the poem. These mirrors are broken up in to definable sections, which is nice, but you also quickly realize that these sections bleed into one another in many ways, and she has set them up to be read in sequential order. The mirrors are as follows: Tarot/Qabalah, Alchemy, Mythology, History and the World, Astrology and Astronomy, Arts and Humanities. In sections such as: History and the World, or Arts and Humanities, you find many common elements you have come to expect from academic writing, and in many ways Gordon-Bramer is reusing a lot of the common ways that Plath has been read over the years in these sections. The thing that makes this book unique is the author’s experiences in Mysticism, Qabalah, Tarot, etc. This is where the new information is coming in, and she makes some very compelling arguments in this book. If you are worried that you have no idea about Mysticism, Qabalah, Tarot, etc., don’t be. The book does an excellent job of catching you up to speed on the important information, without bogging you down so much that you feel you have to study for hours before reading it. Honestly, as someone interested in the subject, I would have liked to study more, either by virtue of even more information from the author, or a suggestion of where to begin in the introduction. The language is easy to understand, and while the material is challenging, especially the Alchemy sections, she does a good job of making it accessible. If I had one con about the way these sections are written, and it’s not really a con to me at all, it’s that the author doesn’t fully explain her connections sometimes. She expects you to fill in the gaps sometimes, but I actually like this, and given the ambiguity of the subject material, I’m not sure at all that it’s not intentional and perfectly suited. One actual complaint I have about the book, and this is more due to my laziness than anything, is it relies on you having Plath’s poem right beside you as you are reading it. Instead of quoting pieces of Plath’s poetry, it will just say: “line 9” or something of that nature, which requires you to go back and count lines to see the reference. I feel like actual quotation of the lines referenced could be useful here and save a little time from having to flip back and forth between two books. Granted, this process would make the book exceptionally thicker I suppose. On that note, aesthetically I like the size of the book. It is large to seem like a text book, but not so overwhelming that I had trouble holding it in my hands while taking a hot bath. On the whole I would rate this book a 9/10 on enjoyability, freshness of material and perspective, ease of reading, and layout, with the only mark against it being the one I mentioned above.

I think this book is great. It's a lot of information to take in

I had a few bumps trying to get this book before my class started. Amazon didn't have it in stock, so I had to purchase it from the distributor who took longer than expected. Other than that, I think this book is great. It's a lot of information to take in, the explanations (mirrors) for one poem are a little lengthy, but vital to get a good grasp of the poem. The illustrations are fantastic, and it's apparent a lot of time and effort went into the quality of the book as well as the information within it.

From the dungeon of ego and into the light of love and self- acceptance.

I found this book to be very enjoyable. There are a few typos but the quality of the writing majorly overshadows them. There is a lot to learn from within these pages and I make a bet that anyone who reads this won’t leave without deep critical thought and a good mood.

Holloway’s Journey to the Poetic Light Illuminations is a primer for invaluable information on the human psyche and how to pull yourself from the dungeon of ego and into the light of love and self- acceptance. The author’s faith plays an integral role in this book as his boat rolls up and down through the ocean of life. I’m personally not religious, but I am spiritual and can feel the need for a higher power in his words. Dare I say that reading this helped me find God? No. But it did remind me of him, and I thank the author for that. The author is also a huge nature fan, which can be seen in many of his poems. He uses metaphors that describe the sun, the trees, the flowers, ect. He paints images in the mind very well.

As a fellow poet, the way I see it is that Holloway Jr. is a wordsmith; there’s no other way to describe him. He uses many poetic devices that are fun to read. He has a way of utilizing complex tools without seeming overly pedantic, which is hard to do.

I hold a firm belief that anyone would enjoy this book, poet or not.

The book is separated into several different parts, I will just go over my favorites.

The first part which includes poems like “Coming to terms”. “Reality Slice (An Assessment)”, “Cerebral wildness”, and “Moving to Love”, explore the modern psyche and exemplifies what it’s like to be human; A struggle between forces that push and pull us throughout our lives. This boxing match with the ego is a common theme throughout this part. I also enjoyed the poems, “Aromatic to auditory”, “New Nature, and “Vacation In Mind”, as they offer a seat of relaxation between the hard hitting truths about the psyche.

The second part offers a sensual feast for the mind. With poems like “Where do I lay?” and “Sundress”, you are swept into a maelstrom of light and deep metaphor dealing with a womanly figure and a minutia of beautiful sensations. Though my favorite of the second part Is “From the Pillow to the Concrete.” which talks about the harshness of the world and arms you with awareness to prepare.

The third part focuses on sadness and redemption. In parts, the author questions his faith in God and in others, he is pondering when he is going to leave this earth. My favorite poem in this part of the book is “Extinguished in Silence” which really hit home with me because I deal with depression. The last line of the poem says it all, “Silence Burns…”.

The fourth part smashes through the pages with hard hitting emotional lines like the poem “Realization Evaporated.” If you’re expecting this book to slow down, you will be pleasantly surprised. The author shows no signs of slowing down early into the final part. The poem, “Moving Words” touches me as a poet, as it speaks of and shows the power of words and the heart.

My favorite of the collection is “Time Between Scribes” a sweet poem that goes with the flow that life is bitter, yet sweet all at once. Journey to the Poetic Light has something to offer all readers, and is a highly recommended read.

About the Author
Lynda G. Bullerwell resides in Texas with her husband, Tim and her Autistic son, Junior. She is also the proud Mother of two daughters, and 3 beautiful grandchildren. Lynda has been writing poetry for over 30 years and considers it her passion and a release for emotions since she was a child. Lynda released a collection of poetry entitled “Into the Light” published on October 16, 2013 by Water Forest Press, and has been published in literary magazines including Hudson View, Skyline Review, Epiphany Magazine, Writefromwrong, Miracle e-zine and Struggle magazine.

Beautiful and Inspiring Poetry

A Review of Crackers in Bed : A Collection of Poems by Lynda Bullerwell

In her second collection of poetry, Lynda Bullerwell gives us selections that are ethereal, poignant and reflective of that delicate balance between love and hate, joy and sorrow, life and death, childhood and adulthood, and love and loss. Her poetry is multi-faceted and exhibits layers of meaning in every line.

Many of her poems speak of the co-existence of love and pain so seamlessly, as in the title poem. “Pain trickles slowly like hydration for an i.v. as life flows back in through transfusions of love.” And in “Blowing Out the Candles”, she speaks in mournful tones of waiting for a reunion that will never come, and having to “close thoughts away in the cupboard as if nothing ever happened.” We see how well this poet understands love, and how the touch of a lover can temper the harsh realities of life (in “Softening the Lines) and how it feels to give one’s heart away so freely, only to have it returned as damaged goods (“Unconditional”). Lynda Bullerwell effortlessly captures what eludes so many other poets: the ability to describe how it really feels to be in love. “You can never, ever have too much love or poetry, for they are one in the same, and as vital as oxygen or the beating of this heart.” (“Poetic Transfusion”). In the poem “Wet Paint”, we are given pure sensuality when the poet tells us that “There is something about whispers under the covers anticipating traces of fingertips upon waiting curves that makes me miss you more.”

Her poems about poets and the art of writing poetry are just as stunning as those about love. “There is something beautiful about an unfinished poem swirling in my sleep, churning thoughts like butter more delectable with age” (“A Novel Idea”). One of the most beautiful pieces in the collection, “If Not For Flowers”, is nothing short of exquisite, showcasing Lynda’s exceptional talent and ability to create pictures in the reader’s mind with phrases that describe “art flowing like tumbleweeds across barren plains/shaky adjectives reverberating from willows into the very beat of a breaking heart just aching for the revelation of another perfect sunrise….”

I was able to relate on a very personal level to “Ghost Town”, which calls to mind the very powerful effect that listening to music has on me. The poet perfectly captures that feeling that music imparts to me that no other medium does because it has the ability to take “pain from the tattered souls leaving new breath making misers into kings with only a touch of laughter and a few scattered chords to linger on…”

Her ode to Sylvia Plath laments the fact that Plath had to “flutter away, like April does when the flowers have bloomed”, here “to bloom only for a season”, but leaving her mark on every poet in some way “to pull us down with you to lie in your words like the flowers you left.”

Lynda Bullerwell is far too humble, thinking herself and her poems not quite measuring up to the greats like Poe, Dickinson, Plath and Barrett Browning. The irony here is that she is all of those poets, and then some. She desires to write something memorable (“Her”) and as “this woman who can’t really call herself a poet, yet” (“In the Corner at Starbucks”) to “feel it in my soul deep down where the pounding won’t stop until keys click out thoughts that stick in your throat, burn you, from the inside to get out”, asking “What will it take to make it real”. This book makes it real for me.

A Review of Crackers in Bed a book of poems by Lynda Bullerwell

“Like poets I have loved/ that never loved me back” are two lines from a poem in this wonderful volume of poetry from a poet whom readers love for her wide range and multi-dimensional work. She speaks of how “that muse envy strikes” and it is true of most poets. We think we are poets and then read works of the greats, those famous ballad poets of old days, the Beat generation poets of mid-century and then the modern day poets and we say to ourselves, “I wish I had written that.” I often feel that way when I read this woman’s poetry. Her range and ease with words is amazing.
She mentions Sylvia Plath’s “milk and honey skin/ was too pure for this wind/ too fragile for winter…and when the green is gone…I don’t believe poets string syllables/ into pitch perfect assonance/only when their hearts are broken.” But it is so hard for poets to write happy, and somehow Lynda is an exception to the rule---Plath wrote of the darkened depths of manic depression so well, maybe better than anyone ever has, but Lynda does both so proficiently and is able to master “happy” because with much of her poetry “Life flows back in/ through transfusions of love.” In the end, real, sustainable love can override the bad emotional feelings from the past that (like guests who wear out their welcome) never know when to leave.
And she has such astute perceptions of life. In “Ghost Town” she says “Take the slow train to reality because there is no colder place.” Figurative language—which Lynda uses so well in her works-- is why we want not only to read but to feel the beauty of the words, and yet in that beautiful ugliness of her darker pieces emerges the reality that is literal, tragic and painful.
In this book, Lynda Bullerwell is definitely “art wrapped in poetry” and she is a “gypsy mama” covering so much ground; her words moving from theme to theme, dream to dream, treading through the darkest of heartaches to the softest syllables of the light of love. The bond she has with vibrant imagery is (as her poems express) is “like the bond, strong/ between a Mother/and her child.”
As I read Lynda’s poems, my thoughts echo those of the poem “Her.” In it she relates, “I want to write that classic; / the one people remember; / the one that leaves you different than when you came. “It seems Lynda’s poems in Crackers in Bed do just that---and in a very positive and inspirational way. Readers will absorb themselves in this book to the extent that they will never want to come out of it.

You see this poet's heart. As someone who doesn't really write poetry, I sometimes find it too dark and moody or hard to interpret, but Lynda's work is deep and poignant yet an honest breath of fresh air. I find myself re-reading certain poems, because they are like listening to a favorite song.

"You never wanted a daughter..." - powerful poems from word one

I now have two books of Gwyndyn Alexander's poetry, and I have been deeply impressed with her writing. These poems are not easy to read, not easy to sit with, and certainly not easy to think about. But please do - read, and sit, and think. For me, with a somewhat similar background in some regard, that is precisely the point - taking out the horror, and the pain, and the tears, and offering them to us for our own. Sometimes with anger, sometimes with sadness, but always with a clarity and a vision that reminds me of some of my favorite poets. If you haven't, you must read Gwyndyn Alexander.

Emotional and powerful read!

Though short in length, this book was incredibly moving and powerful. Gwyndyn Alexander, who speaks from personal experiences, creates a tragically beautiful and haunting piece of literature spoken through poetry based on children's' fairy tales. It proves that sometimes, the monsters we read about or see on TV aren't what we should be afraid of. That sometimes, those monsters are very real and live under the same roof as we do, in the disguise of a loving parent or other close relative. Through "Once Upon A Childhood", Gwyndyn has written something that will validate others who have or still are living in a constant nightmare. Every single word of this book was filled with raw emotion, as though she's put her blood, sweat and tears into her work. And each is more powerful than the last. I have a feeling that Gwyndyn Alexander will become the voice of this generation through her poetry. I highly recommend this book, along with her other works. You will not be disappointed, and you will be left in awe when done reading.

Painfully beautiful

These words, these words, these words....are nothing short of powerful and invoking. These injustices have been beautifully crafted into poetry based on fairytales by Gwyndyn Alexander. I felt sad and angered for all children who have experienced and are experiencing these atrocities. It makes you want to fight for these children. Honestly, this book took me through an emotional whirlwind. I think that is the mark of good poetry. Even though these poems are dark I think that they offer a release, closure and healing for those effected.
