About the Author
Poet/performance artist Davida Singer is the author of shelter island poems (Canio’s Editions) and Port of Call (Plain View Press, 2012), which was a finalist for the Audre Lorde Poetry Award. She often reads combining spoken word with jazz and klezmer, and her multimedia project khupe was performed with musicians at Manhattan venues, including The Kitchen and Cornelia Street Café. Singer is the recipient of four fellowships from The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, and was featured at the 2011 SOMOS Summer Writers Series. Her poems have appeared in The Comstock Review, Feminist Studies, Response, Sinister Wisdom, and Chokecherries Anthology, among others. She was a theater journalist at The Villager for 13 years, and currently teaches creative writing and literature at Hunter College and School of Visual Arts in New York City.
In 2014 Santa Fe composer/pianist John Rangel created a jazz suite for naked romance and then some to accompany the poetry in performance.

Wonderful Book of Poetry

To say davida singer is a poet at the height of her powers is a severe understatement. Few today can match her gift of language-the lush surprise, the accuracy of her images of place, of weather, of the passion of life--,as in "this space between leaving and gone," or in an elegy to a deceased friend, "how everyone she touched /stayed touched," or the prescient shock of the first lines of "verge"--"there is always something burning/ in gotham or about to..."
"naked romance...and then some" is a rewarding experience for any lover of the art of poetry.

Romance Lives..

As an actor, imagery, through line, and musicality in language is essential for us to perform. Every single word that Singer says in this amazing book has every single one of those traits. She is a master at capitvating you with stories that are policical, provocative, and of course romantic. In a world where it seems that romance is slowly disappearing. It is so refreshing to see that in Singers world it still exists. Which makes me believe that it exists in my world.

These poems are so urgently alive. The New Mexico sky, a bike ride in the rain, the body of a finch on the road--everything in Singer’s gaze shimmers with color and pulses with sound. Passionate and provocative, (and yes, nakedly romantic,) the poems left me stunned and woozy and grateful.

Great read, a must read!!!

Great book full of poetry. I normally don't write reviews because they are just time consuming but this one was well it. I haven't seen great written poems in years thought I'd never see them. But, I was wrong because this book is full of them. I was intrigued by the author use of words. It let me astonished because I thought it would be boring but it kept me reading, I actually couldn't put it down until I was done with the whole entire book.

Deep. I have been on this poetry kick lately. This book is filled with different poets, the writing is phenomenal, not everyone can write with an intense feeling that really pulls the reader into their words. But everyone of these poet were able to generate the emotion in me. Loved it!

About the Author
Sarah Sousa received the 2013 Red Mountain Poetry Prize for CHURCH OF NEEDLES (Red Mountain Press, 2014). Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Apalachee Review, Barn Owl Review, Spoon River Poetry Review, The Best of Kore Press 2012 Poetry, Tupelo Quarterly and Water-Stone Review, among others. She is the recipient of a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize and has been nominated for a Pushcart. She holds an MFA from Bennington College and lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband, the musician Ray LaMontagne, and their two sons.

Once there was a girl who spoke garlands...

I'm in awe of Sarah Sousa. I was hooked from the opening poem called "Her Moods Caused Owls," when she writes:
Once there was a girl who spoke
garlands; blossoms unspooled
from her mouth. Confused,
she tried to flee her own fecundity.
And her fear caused gardens.

I'm swallowing a story
that ends with blood-stained snow.
I know how this looks.
It appears to be true.

I feel it in my heart. I can't wait to devour her other work.

The Modern Poetess Writes Another Great Tome

This book is a little different than the previous books, all her work is wonderful-this one is superlatively written, emotionally wrent, informative,historical,thought provoking, I could keep going...I will keep going back to it for if for nothing else the hauntingly deep feelings it evokes in me-I love it! Great poet, person,I wish she could do a statewide tour, but in the meantime, I have her books to keep savoring and can't wait until her next project-terrific!!!

I rarely review books... I prefer to digest and tuck them away like secret treasures, pulling them out to reread as one seeks out the company and comfort of an old friend.
However, after reading Split the Crow I wanted to encourage others who enjoy words to sample Sarah Sousa's work. Her poems resonate as they paint a story with descriptions that touch the reader long after the book has been closed.

Awesome book I would say it is a book that tantalizes every sense though I am diabetic, I can really imagine the taste, makes ya pine for the sense all the way through. I think very imagistically written and awesome book for anyone to read. I love Kara's poetry and truly a morsel to revere always. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really loved the book. it has some wonderful poems which are so sweet, and full of love. As valentine's day being round, i was thinking to gift something to my husband, i think i got the right kind off book. It feels so nice after reading all through the book!!!! About the Author

Fikret Berkes is Distinguished Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Manitoba, Canada. Today I felt loss and sorrow, but was always aware of the beauty in them and of the light, if I'd only raise my head to see it. About the Author
SUZANNE WEBER is a writer perhaps best known for creating and performing the character Anita Liberty, a performance poet who achieves notoriety by devoting her entire career  to humiliating her jerk of an ex-boyfriend in public. Weber penned three books as Anita Liberty – HOW TO HEAL THE HURT BY HATING, HOW TO STAY BITTER THROUGH THE HAPPIEST TIMES OF YOUR LIFE and the young adult title, THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE (YEP, THAT WOULD BE ME). Her short film, ANITA LIBERTY, was a Sundance selection and was co-written and directed by R.J. Cutler (The September Issue). A native New Yorker, Weber currently resides in Los Angeles where she writes television pilots and has started taking her coffee with soy milk. She lives with her husband and her daughter, a sassy little chip off her mother’s block of contempt.

Fussy Loves Company

Why are you always on me about being fussy?

You’re fussy.

You’re fussy if you’re tired.

You’re fussy if you’re hungry.

You’re fussy when you have gas.

You’re fussy when there’s nothing on TV.

You’re fussy when you’re too hot or too cold.

You’re fussy in the morning before caffeine.

You’re fussy when I wake you up

in the middle of the night.

You’re fussy when you look in the mirror

and don’t like what you see.

You’re fussy when your mother pays too much

attention to you.

You’re fussy when your mother doesn’t respond

to your call.

You’re fussy when you’re over- and/or under-stimulated.

You’re fussy sometimes for no apparent reason at all.

The gist is

we’re not so different—

you and me.

Clearly, the fussy nut

has not fallen far

from its fussy-ass tree.

Suck It

Can you explain to me

what makes you

so very uncomfortable

with my pacifier?

I like to suck.

You taught me that.

I got rewarded for sucking.

I got fed. With warm, delicious milk.

I felt close to you.

Heck . . . I felt close to achieving Nirvana.

Can you blame me for wanting to keep that sense of

peace and oneness going for just a little longer?

Sucking on something makes me feel like I might

have a chance at being a truly successful human being.

Can you say that about any of your vices?

You wish you could find something that makes you feel this good about life.

Something that wasn’t bad for you . . .

didn’t rot your liver,

give you cancer,

slow down your brain.

Just clean, honest impulse satisfaction.

It’s hurting no one.

Except maybe you and your fragile sense

of confident parenting

in the face of some random stranger’s perceived judgment

Child's Garden of Versus (Wickedly Funny)

Poet Weber may sound ornery and ungrateful, but this volume could well be be the most empathetic volume of verse ever written. It takes the young child's point of view, which is mainly that parents are often silly, often stumbling and sometimes more than a wee bit out of touch with wee ones. I am not sure who will get more pleasure out of this volume, those of us who have been infants? Parents? Or those who witness, mouth agape, other parents struggle with the mysteries of the humankind's most shared, and most daunting task: tending to a baby. I laughed all through this book, but don't know if it because it conjures up my deep suppressed memories as an infant, or embarrassment as as a parent. Then again, I cannot rule out it might just be because the author and conceit are so darn whacky and right on. Brava Suzanne Weber! Can't wait to give this out at the next baby shower (which I was dreading). The reading will begin just after the oohs and ahhs stop following the ribbons and lace. No pacifiers please. This book is for howling.

Absolutely Hilarious

I loved Suzanne Weber when she wrote as Anita Liberty in her three previous volumes of poetry. How to Heal the Hurt by Hating should be required reading for every woman getting over a jerk, wait, make that every woman. Now she turns her lens on childhood and all the hell we (hopefully inadvertently) put our kids through, of course with all the best intentions. A perfect baby shower present, this is required reading for new, and continuing, parents.

Love Those Little Wretches!

This book is full of funny and real poetry and ponderings that our babies would say if they could talk to us - musings about mommy and me classes, why they might like your iPhone better than you, how they can't stand that big blue ball you shove up their nose to clear out the mucus, and even why the television is a win-win for the both of you.

These are laugh-out-loud poems to share with your mommy friends - even if your mommy friends have kids who are as old as my kids now - I cracked up reading this book and remembering the "good old days" when my babies were little.
