I'm not a huge fan of poems, but I really enjoyed Ethans Sometime Poet. Some of the poems, are funny, some make you wanting more, and all of them were interesting and hot. My favorite was Yes, want to know why? I guess you'll have to get the book to find out.

Happiness in a book

It is extremely difficult to remain melancholy after reading any of these poems. My favorites are "The Little Flower That Spoke", "Bring a Little Sunshine", and "Flowers Have Intelligence"; however, all of these poems are uplifting. Any time I am having a bad day, all I have to do is read one or two of them and a smile forms on my face. I highly recommend this book of poems to anyone who needs a little happiness in their pocket.

About the Author

Jonathan van Belle writes poetry as if it were music, but defined by the language of words instead of notes, his syllables running up and down the page as notes play on their staffs. His forms are true. He keeps the sentimental at bay, yet does admit to passion for precision and the syncopation life presents. His poems are open to the public, full of charge.

Brilliant Expedition Amongst the Pages of The St. Stylite Trivialist Primer.

This brilliant collection of literary genius inspires its readers to make discoveries on an interactive journey into the creative, humorous, and intellectual world of Jonathan Van Belle's writings. As a former adjunct professor, I believe this book should be a mandatory read for all aspiring writers! I've read many books, and I've seen nothing like it! From centos that reference the great poets to hilarious clerihews, amongst alphabetical free verse, shape poems, haiku, laments, and mnemonic memorizations culminating in the ordination and bestowing of the Degree of Doctor of Trivialism, Mr. Van Belle demonstrates an incredible wit mixed with pure genius in this highly unique presentation of literature! Bravo! One of my favorite lines which caused me to laugh out loudly was on page 51. He writes, " My new favorite word, on this zlik and syrilliash evening, is newdygopielpoxtyodsynessumsarleiruzfojjojreajadleqzusmzozlo. It is pronounced "ur-bee." It is a noun, so say I, with at most four meanings: (1) the thing this first definition defines; (2) the thing defined by this second definition; (3) the thing defined by the definition that follows the second definition. Again, humor abounds in, perhaps, one of the greatest literary works of all time.

A bonified classic; a page-turner. Couldn't put it down after I received it. A pleasure to read - moved quickly from stark, dank realities of the human condition to fantastical visions replete with colorful, bubbly imagery. Has the gravity of a literary cabernet sauvignon but the playfulness and lightheartedness of a young beaujolais. Have read it twice now and can't wait for JVB's next work.

Fantastic

A very well put together, bittersweet collection of haiku. Easy to pick up and read through, but that doesn't mean the content is simple. Separate sections hold different themes, and while any one can be read by itself it's best read straight through. The haiku format, when done well, is a short-form writing style that can have the same impact as a longer piece of poetry. Mallory gets that aspect just right as her wonderful collection inspires exactly what the title suggests: self-reflection. It's not hard to relate to what she's written.

So much of the beauty rendered through haiku lives in the words evanescing into a natural image like water disappearing into soil. This image, bringing the eyes and frenetic "monkey mind" into its essential stasis, returns the reader to the text which, with masterful dictional and tonal ambiguity, mimes the fundamental irony of the occasion of these elegiac reflections - the literary presence of an absent moment now passed, the presence of the moment's metaphorical subject in and through its literal subject, etc - and recreates the occasion for art in the ceaseless engagement of self with the outside world whose reconciliation is always momentary, always changing even in the unchangingness of its constant change.

This "dynamic stasis" if you can allow the oxymoron is at the heart of the noble stereoscopic "yūgen" aesthetic so poignant in the best haiku, jettisons (or welcomes!) the reader into a terrestrial sublime that is also transcendental and universal because it denies the opposition of these modes. It harmonizes them by nesting reader, writer, nature, emotions, past, present, and the eternal "fractally" (to put it coarsely) within one another, making of a horizontally minuscule and vertically fathomless observation a gateway into the sort of reflection leading timelessly through an infinitude of forking paths into yūgen, which is the radiant costume of the sincere and noble soul exercising its connection to beauty.

Mallory leads us to the proverbial "snow in a silver bowl," while at the same time conjuring a music throughout her volume in which her English isn't incidental to the art but absolutely essential to it - something utterly unavailable in even the best translations of the finest Japanese haiku. This is a tremendous accomplishment. But she achieves this with none of the sententious bluster of the foregoing review! Her poems are concrete, felt, immediate, spare, radiant, gentle, assured, sadly beautiful, unassuming, wise in their wondering.

For each of us, both civilian and veteran, there is aftermath to be dealt with. Of war, of love, of tragedy great or small. Each must needs be handled perhaps with courage, hopefully with honor, but nonetheless handled. Most often, that simply means to continue despite. In this small collection we hope to share somewhat of our experience in continuing despite what has gone before.

Emotional, Heartfelt Poetry From Non-Poets

When my friend asked me to read his poetry book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not big on poetry, personally. I'm not an expert on the topic. But, the friend asked, so I delivered.

I'm glad I did.

The McCollough brothers, Andrew and Joel, are, by their own admission, not poets. It reads like poetry by non-poets, so technical poets may be put off by their style. I personally found it refreshing.

What drew me in and earned it five stars was that nearly every emotion conveyed, I personally felt. One poem states that the desert and the enemy are far more forgiving of a soldier's flaws than his loved ones back home. I've been through that. I've felt that. Reading that poem, I felt it again.

I definitely recommend Aftermath to veterans so they know they are not alone, and to civilians wishing to understand how a veteran's mind ticks.

I highly recommend reading and re-reading

I picked this up and expected the same response I have with most poetry: confusion. However, I immediately appreciated the rawness of the words and the emotion behind them. It is a reflection of deeply personal thoughts and (in my opinion) human nature. Each author has his own voice, which lends to the conversation-like quality of the back-and-forth. I believe I found my next tattoo in My Passport. I highly recommend reading and re-reading.

Great read, highly recommend

I can speak highly enough about this book. Each author has a distinct voice and as you read through you begin to pick up on the nuances between the two authors. It is optimistic, thoughtful, insightful, grim, and dark all at the same time and you sense the emotion in each piece. The authors undoubtedly put their hearts and souls into these poems and I found their works surprisingly comforting. Great read, highly recommend.

About the Author
Daniel Polsky (1935-2008) was born in New York City, attended CCNY, and received his medical degree from the University of Lieden. He then earned a Bronze Star as a medical officer in Viet Nam. While working as a Family Practice doctor in Brooklyn, New York, he wrote much of his poetry and essays. Aware of the coming of the end of his life from prostate cancer, he asked Don Wilkerson, a psychiatrist friend since his army service to review his poems for publication. The Key speaks most profoundly to the imperative to connect to others in his poetic second secret language. Implementing the literary device of Pathos and the modalities of Confessional Poetry, Daniel Polsky reflects on the experiential of Jewish sensibilities and burdens.
