Aftermath is a work about all the things you think about after the experience is over, whatever that may be. For some of us it’s war. Or love. Or friendship. Or all of the above.
This book arose out of a series of conversations between us. Both of us began writing poetry before, during, and after the wars in the Gulf. Our experience of those years are very different, and the aftermath of those years are as well, but we both were forced to deal with the consequences of decisions made by others, and the fallout from those decisions in our family and in the wider society. Our discussion eventually lead to sharing our poetry and eventually, on deciding to collate our work in a collaborative publication.
But this is not only a book on the emotional aftermath of war, unless war is also taken metaphorically, but simply the aftermath of the un-extraordinary events of life. For each of us, both civilian and veteran, there is aftermath to be dealt with. Of war, of love, of tragedy great or small. Each must needs be handled perhaps with courage, hopefully with honor, but nonetheless handled. Most often, that simply means to continue despite. In this small collection we hope to share somewhat of our experience in continuing despite what has gone before.

Emotional, Heartfelt Poetry From Non-Poets

When my friend asked me to read his poetry book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not big on poetry, personally. I'm not an expert on the topic. But, the friend asked, so I delivered.
I'm glad I did.
The McCollough brothers, Andrew and Joel, are, by their own admission, not poets. It reads like poetry by non-poets, so technical poets may be put off by their style. I personally found it refreshing.
What drew me in and earned it five stars was that nearly every emotion conveyed, I personally felt. One poem states that the desert and the enemy are far more forgiving of a soldier's flaws than his loved ones back home. I've been through that. I've felt that. Reading that poem, I felt it again.
I definitely recommend Aftermath to veterans so they know they are not alone, and to civilians wishing to understand how a veteran's mind ticks.

I highly recommend reading and re-reading

I picked this up and expected the same response I have with most poetry: confusion. However, I immediately appreciated the rawness of the words and the emotion behind them. It is a reflection of deeply personal thoughts and (in my opinion) human nature. Each author has his own voice, which lends to the conversation-like quality of the back-and-forth. I believe I found my next tattoo in My Passport. I highly recommend reading and re-reading.

Great read, highly recommend

I can speak highly enough about this book. Each author has a distinct voice and as you read through you begin to pick up on the nuances between the two authors. It is optimistic, thoughtful, insightful, grim, and dark all at the same time and you sense the emotion in each piece. The authors undoubtedly put their hearts and souls into these poems and I found their works surprisingly comforting. Great read, highly recommend.
