Gaskell is a retired Consulting Engineer who wishes to share his 35 years of experience with both young engineers thinking of starting their own practice and those old hands who wish to improve their results. In essence, Jack’s readers discover “step-by-step” how to start and manage an “outstanding” Engineering Practice and exactly how to gain a reputation as an expert in their specialty. He was President of Gaskell Associates Consulting Engineers; now a Division of Thielsch Engineering, Inc. Jack is a graduate of Wentworth Institute, with an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, and the University of Rhode Island, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Jack was a member of the following professional organizations: Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers, Providence Engineering Society, Electrical League of Rhode Island, Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, National Electromagnetic Field Testing Association and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. He is a past President of the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers and past President of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society, past Director of the Electrical League of Rhode Island and past Chairman of the Electrical Code Sub-Committee of the Rhode Island Building Code Standards Committee. GREAT! and the only current book on Consulting Engineering

This book is great. It covers everything about consulting engineering from becoming an engineer to eventually selling your practice. My favorite chapters are Fee Proposals, Forensic Engineering, and Cashing Out.

"Martello is clearly a talented writer, as even from the small amount of content that is within the pages of this book, it is obvious that he has a way with words. His poetic verses are succinct, but still powerful. This is the way poetry should be, playing with assumptions and turning them on their heads, not over wringing out words repeatedly to create something completely unknown, but something new instead. The only problem about this collection is that we wish it was longer."

Andy Martello is an award-winning author and freelance entertainer living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wonderful Book of Prosetry (Prose+Poetry)

This book is simply amazing. It is not your typical ABAB poetry, it is instead the poetry that sings straight from the heart. The raw unfiltered emotion that can course through us all is spilled onto the page in this book.

A Few Words, Many Answers

Andy Martello shows yet another side of his talented self in his latest artistic effort, "Pretty Words, Nothing more. An Unlikely Book of Poetry." The award winning author, comedian and Price Is Right Announcer has shown new depth in this collection of short poems. I love randomly picking a page and finding a gem that sets me off. Some lines touched me so deeply that they hurt while at the same time inspiring me to write lyrics: "Tortured is the man whose Siren and Muse is the same." Ouch and thank you. Follow that with "He learned being the right man was not enough." So true. I can only hope I remember that one and strive to be enough. I bet there is an answer in Andy Martello's poetry. I keep it close and consult it frequently. I know most people will feel the same way. I hope there's more to come.

From the ruins of the Third Reich in Germany emerged one of the most instantly recognizable vehicles of the second half of the 20th century: the Volkswagen Transporter. With origins often attributed to a sketch produced by the flamboyant Dutchman Ben Pon, the reality is that the Transporter was the result of plans developed for Heinz Nordhoff, the highly talented if individualistic Director General of Volkswagen from 1948 until 1968.

Launched in 1949, the Transporter was designed to provide the company with a second model to run alongside the equally recognizable Beetle as a means of generating income. It was "designed for town and country, short and long distances, autobahns and field tracks, goods and passengers, retail and industry" and as such was to prove readily adaptable to a whole range of forms, including the camper van.

Manufactured for almost 20 years in Germany and until 1975 in Brazil, the first generation Transporter achieved peak production in its homeland in 1964 when more than 187,000 were built. In all, almost two million were built in Germany and a further 450,000 at Volkswagen factories elsewhere - a staggering total for what started out as a purely utilitarian vehicle.

Richard Copping, an acknowledged expert on the history of Volkswagen and the Transporter in particular, explores the history of the first generation model from its post-war origins through to the end of an era when production ceased in the mid-1970s.

I bought this for my brother in law who is a Volkswagen fanatic. Wonderful pictures and history in content. Would have like to see it as a longer book though. Still great book!

About the Author
Matthew Howard is the author of The Fates of Stars, the creator of Meteor Mags, and the blogging maniac at Mars Will Send No More. Matthew formerly volunteered as DJ and engineering assistant at WCBN 88.3 FM Ann Arbor. He has studied, performed, and recorded music, primarily guitar, for more than twenty years. Matthew printed small runs of four booklets of poetry between 1993 and 2002. He hosted poetry readings in Ann Arbor in the early 1990s and joined the Ann Arbor Poetry Slam Team in a regional competition.

Such a Beautiful Book

I've enjoyed the work of many different poets, but the poems in The Fates of Stars and Other Poems touched me in a way few others have. They are very visual and have a pace that brings so much more feeling to them. They are beautiful, and I am so glad the author shared them in this collection. It is an amazing first book.

This collection of poetry blew me away. Most of the poems are quite short (4-5 lines), but they all carry as much meaning as any long poem I have read. This poetry is soulful, intellectually stimulating, and understandable. My favorite thing about this collection is how easily I could identify with the poetry. Most of the poems are about secret love, wanting someone, loving someone, and leaving someone (both in body and spirit). There is also a large portion of the poems that were written about missing someone who has passed away, and I found it to be especially beautiful. If you have ever had a secret lover, or lost someone you will never forget, this is the poetry for you.

feeling-tones of two women poets in a long bygone era in Japan.

Beautiful and universal

Unlike other reviewers, I am not an aficionado of Japanese poetry or culture, nor have I ever studied this period in Japanese history. I found this book entirely by chance buried in an obscure corner in my college library. I read a couple of random pages and fell in love. I checked it out repeatedly throughout my academic career, then bought it.

These women so effectively communicate, in few words, universal feelings of love. While the poems are deceptively simple, they manage to be so beautiful that I am amazed every time I pick it up.

Even more impressive than the writing is how easy it is to relate to the emotions behind it. As I have grown older and experienced so much more of life, I am surprised to find my own feelings mirroring one poem after another. What once seemed pretty words are eerily my own thoughts. It's amazing, considering they were written one thousand years ago!

Eckhard Gerdes has published books of poetry, drama, and ten novels, including Hugh Moore and My Landlady the Lobotomist (a top five finisher in the 2009 Preditors and Editors Readers Poll and nominated for the 2009 Wonderland Book Award for Best Novel of the Year). He has won the Bissell Award, been a finalist for the Starcherone and the Blatt awards, and was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year. Intelligent, Funny, and Soulful Blues

I bought the book of lyrics as a companion to Eckhard Gerdes's CD, Blues for Youse, and was pleasantly surprised to find the book to contain many more songs and poems than the CD. Since I bought the CD first, I couldn't help hearing the melodies in the lyrics to the songs I already knew. The rest was left up to my imagination. These lyrics are at once funny and intelligent, soulful and enigmatic. Some of my favorites include "I'm so Adequate", "Destruction Mama", "Blues for Osiris", "Hard Blue Paisley", and "Morning Glory". Topics include the deeply personal, as well as the lyrical, poetic, and formal. Some pieces fall into a narrative vein, and some are quasi-essayistic. Some are just plain fun. All are special. It didn’t surprise me that I loved the poems of Southern California

Sandy Giedeman is a poet of place, a keen observer who shows us both Southern California and forlorn Midwestern towns. It didn’t surprise me that I loved the poems of Southern California. I’ve lived here all my life and my love for this land is deep in my blood.

The Santa Ana rolls like a hell wheel across
the mountains…
I heard a man say “California is heartbreaking.
It tries to be Paradise, but it’s not.”

But when Giddeman describes a decaying Midwestern mill town I find myself equally enthralled, homesick for places I have never been, for lives I have never known.

Steel mill with its own language;
blast furnace, hod carrier, slag
millwright,, pig iron, skelp…

What is left behind?
All that is unyielding, unforgiving, hard.

The poems are not all about landscape. Giedeman often uses landscape for a lens to explore family relationships, love and loss, the very texture of life.

I drive a road and dream. I loved you with all my breath.
And now you sleep, brother. The woman said he called from
Barstow and cried. Find you spot and sleep, dream under
relentless stars. You could never sleep; then you slept. I always
get the alls late at night. If I don’t pick up, it hasn’t happened.

Make Time for "In This Hour"

In a luminous collection that gives me images to fill a dozen daydreams, one of my favorite describes the poet as a teenaged girl with a laughing boy--all gums and eager--on a St. Louis back street near the Mississippi, listening to Miles Davis play "All of You." The poet allows us to look back in time at a moment when she shared rum and coke with "one of those who peak too early. Collar turned up, hair slicked." In "Reverie," she's an eight-year who discovers dusty slot machines hidden under a blanket in the basement of her Chicago grandmother's house. She keeps her knowledge a secret because she finds it unsavory. That night she stands on a stool to listen to "The Shadow" on the radio: "The Shadow knew about what evil lurks in the hearts of men." From this collection, it's obvious the poet knows that hearts possess goodness as well.

In praise of the poem

As a long time fan of Sandra Giedeman's prose, I am am thrilled to hold this beautiful book in my hands and enchanted to adventure where Giedeman's language takes me. There is an earthy narrative here that escorts the reader through passages in the Ozarks, Mississippi, San Clemente, Zaca Lake. Here is honest prose, here is the sound of truth: these are poems you will want to hold in your mouth like hard candy. If for no other reason than lines like this: "In October you can change your life."

A Poet for those who "aren't into poetry."

The trend these days in poetic literature (which I, personally, feel is unfortunate) is to promote free verse poems that may (or may not) leave an emotional impression but not necessarily an intellectual one. By that I mean, I have recently heard that one local teacher is teaching that a poem need not be understood or even make any sense for it to be enjoyed. Perhaps not; but let me ask you, is that what you really want in a poem? Is that what you are looking for? Emotion devoid of content?

I am the last to say what you should or should not look for in a poem; however, in that same vein, I would suggest that the literary intellectuals (snobs?) should not dictate such a thing to you, either. You shouldn’t feel bad or unintellectual if you enjoy an easily understood poem, a poem that paints a picture of simpler times, harkens you back to your childhood, reminds you of past loves—speaks to you in words you understand. And dare I suggest that poetry that rhymes is far from being outdated or unintellectual? That it might even require greater effort and creativity on the part of the composer? That it might—like music—exercise greater power over us?

If you agree, let me introduce you to poet, Rex Holliday. Very few writers—even few good writers—are able to paint an entire scene with so few words as Rex Holliday. Rex writes almost exclusively in quatrain verse. His poems are short but poignant. And reading his work changed my mind about poetry. I used to think one had to read poetry in short sessions. Read two or three, then put it down and let it digest. Now, that’s not a bad way to do it, but I now believe some poets write to be read voraciously. I can sit down and consume one after another, like a big bowl of jellybeans, enjoying each unique flavor and then reaching back for a new experience. And, because Rex’s poems are so short, my favorite flavors can be enjoyed again and again. My only trouble is in picking my favorites.

But on to some specifics about Mr. Holliday’s work. He uses few commas, letting one thought glide into another, but crafting the words to bring out multiple images at once. In some ways, reading his work is a lot like looking at a photograph. He builds an entire scene with barely more than a glimpse. But many of his poems go further than that. His scenes become stories—windows into his childhood and life experiences—that make me imagine myself right there, living it, breathing it, feeling it. I sit down and read a few paragraphs, but get up feeling like I’ve read an entire short story.

All of this is well and good, but little of it would matter to me if it weren’t for the quality of the content. Remember, I’m in this poetry-reading thing for more than just bare emotion. I want more than a cacophony of conflicting images. I want quality. Style. Meaning. Content. And, beyond that, (though you might call me selfish) I want the content to bless me in some way. I find enough of life’s sorrows and tragedies in the news and on Facebook. I find enough of it in my own life. In fact, I often have to search for the good—for the encouragement, the pats on the back, the fond memories, the blessings. Picking up Rex Holliday’s book of poems ended that search for me. For, in that moment, I found what my heart searched for.

I’ve heard a lot of people tell me that they’re “not into poetry.” Seeing what’s being published these days, I think I understand why. But, I would like to offer this challenge to anyone who has claimed such a thing. Read Mr. Holliday’s book. Give his poetry a chance to speak to you. And, then tell me whether or not you’re really, truly “not into poetry.” Maybe, just maybe, you’re not into—dare I say it?—bad poetry. (Is there such a thing as a bad poem? Yes. I most certainly believe there is, but that is a discussion for another day.)

And one more thing. Good poetry, like good food, is meant to be shared. Read them to your spouse. Tuck your kids into bed at night with them. Call up a friend who is having a rough day and share a morsel with her. And, when it’s time to choose a special gift for a loved one, give them the gift that will nurture them for many years to come.

many are funny and clever riffs on familiar nursery rhymes

I recently read something that Jeanette Winterson said, that poetry turbocharges language. I was reminded of that observation when reading Mother, Loose. This collection contains poems that are powerful, punchy and edgy. Some of them are straightforward, some are mysterious and dense, many are funny and clever riffs on familiar nursery rhymes. There are poems about motherhood, about childhood, about mortality. All of them deal in rich, deep and satisfying metaphor. Even when I was not aware of France de Bravo’s specific reference point, there was always a pathway that opened into my own experience and connected me to new understandings. A beautiful example of why we read poetry.
