Chasing the Dream Until it Chases You Back

Being a poet and a basketball dreamer myself I was delighted to find a fellow traveler recently. Kamari N. Talley is an All-American hoopster now playing for Rutgers University, and has just published a sharply observed book of poetry about her dreams and her tough hometown of Camden, NJ.
Kamari Talley is a remarkable person just on the face of it. She is a poet, a preacher, a student, an athlete, and a publisher, and probably a few more things besides. Those who have been at poetry for decades (as I have) will embrace this young person’s passionate poetic energy, her clear declarations of the positives and negatives she has seen. Her poetry is heartfelt, urgent, and ultimately suffused with hope that arises from her sense of self and her religious beliefs.
Is Camden, Only the Strong Survive bold? It is, and to emphasize that, the type of the words is bold, too. The words are blasted across the page without regard for line breaks (though internal rhyme is prominent) and as big as the page can hold. (I’m not kidding, the type is 24 point at least, and not because it is designed for the vision-impaired, but for immediacy.).
The first thing that struck me about Talley (in her poem “Basketball Dreams,” which is not in this collection but can be seen online at YouTube) is that in being a basketball player from Camden it doesn’t seem strange at all for her to rhyme the words “casket” and “basket.” That says a lot about this Jersey inner city where Talley has been a junior college All American at Camden County College and now is an English major entering her senior year at Rutgers-Camden.
The first poem in the book, “Don’t Give Up,” gets you into the poet’s mindset right away. “That feeling that overcomes doubt is hope,” she says, and ends with a brilliant image of a golden ladder as a way out. You might even feel some correspondence with the Statue of Liberty and its Golden Door. America is the land of opportunity, even in hard-edged Camden, and faith, hope and love will take you where you want to go.
Talley sees herself as chasing a Platonic ideal of self realization, not defined by what’s around her but rather an inner destiny: “I’m not a reflection of what I see; I’m an imitation of what I’m born to be.” High stakes for a young poet, but I wouldn’t bet against her. Talley also sees life generally as a test, a challenge but a more pliable one than the standardized tests that blocked her from getting into a Division I college. “See, the visions I saw were too vivid for life’s test to block me.”
Talley is a visionary poet, one to root for and encourage. Sometimes she seems to prefer her dreams to reality, but then she yokes the two together with a smashing image: “When you know the dream so well it knows you, like you’ve chased the dream so long it’s chased you.”
The final poem, “Camden,” takes a hard look at “broken dreams, babies suffering from low self-esteem; fearful gangs playing dangerous games.” But it prefers to conclude “we live in a city where talent lies, and greatness will one day rise.”
The rhythms of Camden, Only the Strong Survive come from street cadence and hip hop, making her a poet in the honorable line of Gil Scott-Heron and Lauryn Hill. Kamari Talley is an all-American poet as well as an All-American basketball player. And she’s a worldclass dreamer, as well.
