About the Author
Donna Stonecipher is the author of four books of poetry: The Reservoir (winner of the Contemporary Poetry Series competition, 2002); SOUVENIR DE CONSTANTINOPLE (Instance Press, 2007); THE COSMOPOLITAN (Coffee House Press, 2008), winner of the National Poetry Series; and MODEL CITY (Shearsman Books, 2015). Her poems have been published in many journals, including Conjunctions, New American Writing, and The Paris Review, and have been translated into six languages. She lives in Berlin, Germany.

72 model cities

I purchased this innovative book of poetry directly from the publisher after reading examples of Stonecipher's model cities in Paris Review and on various websites. The book contains 72 poems about model and actual cities. Many of the poems set in Berlin, where the writer lives. At the start of the book the question is asked "What was it like?" Stonecipher answers this with each poem. Each poem is comprised of four stanzas, each three lines long. Each stanza begins with the statement "It was like ..." But the answers to the questions are remarkably diverse, whilst conforming to the structural pattern that applies to the book as a whole. Within each poem Stonecipher manages to balance unique and often competing images, doing so with quite mesmerizing language. Typical of this is Model City Number 49:

"It was like taking the train across a border between two countries with
disparate languages, one built like a fortress and one slinky as a river, and
thinking about how orderly languages are, keeping within these borders."

The ideas in each of the stanzas poems cross-reference each other, but are capable of standing on their own. Through her poems Stonecipher shows a wry humour, such as when describing the architecture and layout of former Eastern Bloc cities. A wonderfully inventive book which has developed a poetic form all of its own. Stonecipher shows remarkable poetic ability in making the form work throughout the book, on varying city landscapes and architecture, with the poems remaining fresh and beguiling. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves poetry which creates inventive forms and has an interest in cities.

Refreshing look at urban poetry and the journey of a young man toward God. Warren is raw and honest in his poetry, taking you along with him on his journey from orphan to adulthood. Bible verses are included and help stabilize the spiritual side of his story. For anyone who has struggled in childhood you will be able to identify with his poetry.

Dark & Delightful

This collection of lovely, dark and deep poems really impressed and entertained me. I found myself highlighting so many great lines. The imagery was fantastic in every sense of the word. I couldn't even choose just one for a favorite, but I did especially enjoy the musicality and the story of An Early Winter's Tale.

If I were still teaching English, I'd enjoy sharing this collection with my students.

For everyone who enjoys poetry--or more importantly--thinks they do not :D

Sweet and whimsical with seasonal twists of dark, A Pocketful Of Posey was easy on the mind. A cute collection of poems steeped in the magic of love and far off kingdoms, some still with their toes teetering inside a modern world. Illustrations add to the fairytale like mood. I usually take my dark with less sugar, but I did enjoy reading this. The rhyming nature and story of An Early Winter's Tale was very enjoyable.

From its lyrical, alliterative title to its last line of verse (“Winter had come early”), this book of nine poems is a beautiful little bud in a garden of earthly delights.

It is difficult even to read the title and subtitle – “A Pocket Full of Poesy: A Tiny Tome of Epic Proportions” – without a smile at L. Jonté's acute sense of rhythm and playfulness. Those “p's” and “t's” fall like snowflakes. They “have you” before you get to page one.

The book contains eight short poems of great variety and ends with “An Early Winter's Tale,” a 68-stanza tale of a medieval, Faery story battle of the sexes and a woman's right (and ability) to control her own destiny. Vivid and unforgettable is the battle (“Across the land of in-between”) between the Lady Paladin and the Elf King Ryll'kh and his trollkin guards. Like playing a Peter Jackson or “Game of Thrones” inspired video.

Any poem is worth savoring that has an in-your-face stanza such as the challenge of the maiden to the king::

“Relent? Have you gone mad? She said
“Your trollkin guards are smoking dead
Yet still you think to gain my bed
Now get this through your elvish head
I am no one's chattel!”

The shorter poems are still better. The poet muses on a range of subjects from painful partings to humorous seasonal farewells...

“Spring be gone and summer too.
I bid your sunlit days adieu,
And gladly all your charms eschew.
I'm wholly sick of both of you.”

But most of all there's the joy of pure meter and rhythm:

“In the garden of the valley of the houses of the dead
Flow the whispers of confessions of a thousand things unsaid.”

L. Jonté is an accomplished, meticulous wordsmith, a voice that deserves to be heard, and a poetic talent that bears watching.

I have never really reviewed books here before..but Neem Leaves is a special, as it brought back many memories and helped me journey to places unknown. The poetry is diverse ,but in sections where Anu touches on loss, particularly the poems dedicated to her late mother-in-law, are searingly powerful..

I have had the privilege to watch Fletch develop into a brilliant poet. His poems conjure feelings of laughter or crying, leaving an emotion creating a personal connection to his writing.

His first book "Gutter Rhymes" felt more like reading someone's journal rather than a book. This resonates even more so with "My Alluring Mind."

"My Alluring Mind" is a deeper look into his personal life. Struggles along with victories, but not without his sarcastic humour, guide you along this journey of his life. These poems will take you back to moments in time you remember as if they were yesterday. Others expose you to new and exciting experiences as you watch a boy grow in to a man, all along finding peace with himself.

While the book has many poems I enjoy, "Country Lanes" stands out the most to me. Each time it is so easy to imagine myself walking through the Country Lanes, hearing the cows and chickens and the smell of fresh hay.

A must read for poetry lovers!

"The Alluring Mind" is a book of poetry treasures. I could have read the whole book through in one sitting but I found myself not wanting it to end, so I read a few each day and reflected on the experience each poem provides. I have many favorites but one that touched me from the beginning was "Our Kingdom". I was transported to lands so beautiful. Places that I have always wanted to experience personally but have yet to be so blessed. The imagery was so clear it brought out feelings that made me smile and take deep breaths. Mr. Fletcher cleverly meshes the old with the present with his perfectly chosen words. One can easily visualize both the natural and man-made beauty of his beloved "Kingdom".
This collection is a wonderful blend of poetry...some sweet, some intense, all captivating.

Amazing!

While I highly enjoyed all of these poems, I would say that "Names" and "She's Quite a Card" are my absolute favorites. I highly recommend this if you like poetry.
