Reinventing the world, word by word.

If poetry is the act of looking someone straight in the eye, then Mr.Tomkovick's newest volume of poetry, "Confessions of An Ordinary Man," meets that contact criteria. And not only the eye contact, but an enthusiastic hug as well. Wading into the poems also involves an undertow that propels you poem to poem. You think at first you are in control of this reading, but the energy you encounter is oceanic in emotion, waves of ideas moving you with them to shore. And he has composed these poems not just for his own self-preservation but for the purpose of not just entertaining, but also teaching, grieving, cajoling, teasing and ultimately engaging us at our deepest attention. Most of us readers might end up saying, "You had us at sweet potato" ("Web Weaver"). This "wordsmith" lays the foundation of his poems and builds each one from the ground up like a careful carpenter. These poems resonate best if you allow yourself to follow the undertow page by page and be taken over by Mr. Tomkovick's eye for detail and his passion and enthusiasm. He not so much writes as paints with words. If the book were written in colors there would be blinding yellows and reds and purples that deepen into blues and occasionally black-out for a moment only to return to vibrant color. Title notwithstanding, the book could be a hymn to an extraordinary life; and we, as choir members, can sing along and aloud if we like.
These poems grow on you as I found each time I opened up the book, providing a new surprise and a new favorite. My first favorite was "Shirley MacLaine's Blues" because I was stunned (pleasantly!) at the last lines of it:
"the Egyptian merely an overseer of slaves
pyramiding the darkness
obsessed with pleasing gods
I can't seem to see"
"Pyramiding the darkness" one of my favorite lines of the book.
The poet, of course, has his reasons, and yet when I add up the contents of the poems,
my own personal geography wins out, and I alone escape like a runner who captures
the flag. I will say, though, that when I picked up the book again, I had a new favorite
one, "You Too" because I love the echo/opposition of a Dylan Thomas line in the
lines,
"You too, go gentle into that good night
while I, lost in the wash of dreams
contemplating strategies of survival..."
So when you "dive in!" to this Vol. 3 as Mr. Tomkovick invites you, don't be distracted
by his golf swing cover to match the title's "ordinary man" theme. These are no ordinary
poems. They offer a poet's full heart aimed at each reader; and his aim is bull's eye. So let's do "dive in!", baptism style and hear the poet's voice as a blessing.

confident love poem of 3 pages

The third in a series of poems from Jack, this has a span of 1968-2014. The poems are not in chronological order and kicks off with Bridging, an assured, confident love poem of 3 pages. Using short lines and well matched stanzas, his affection and success of life appear.
Love is a theme. For example, Tell me I'm Pretty, uses the emotion to outline the difficulty of staying true to ones self in a chwnging world.Again, Sweet Perfume starts with a declaration of love, Tongue in Groove,26 x2, Divided by Forever, all explore this, the latter using deft historical examples.
The counterpoint to love are works such as Broken, Revelation1992 A and B, plus the comfort of worship in How Can You.
Overall, a volume that illustrates a man, happy with his lot. Simple speech patterns and sparse use of rhyme make this very engaging.
I do think the double line spacing, is not an aid to comprehension.
There are a several poems where,(Geometry of God, G&T, The Path)the author leaps from his happiness and addsa a touch of bite to his verse. Stretching himself, by use of metaphor and flashes of anger, delivery has more bite and Jack should occasionally remain in his hacked off zone.
Overall, well structured and a readble walk though American life.

Continuing the trend of impactful poetry

I've written reviews for Jack's other books, so it's pretty clear I like his style. I have to point out that the cover photo for this book really captures what this is about; passion.
You can tell from the photo that Jack loves golf, and that same passion for poetry comes through in this latest volume. As a teacher for so many years, his passion for the true education of students comes through in "G&T." His passion for helping others comes through in "Death In Small Doses." Jack paints a vivid picture of how much easier things would be if the impact of life decisions were immediate and pronounced.
There are over 30 poems, and each one makes this volume well worth it. Love, family, God, politics, life, death, they're all in there, and more. Yes, humor too. Some will find themselves laughing out loud a few times like I did. Feel free to strike up a conversation. I definitely plan to ask him about one of the cartoon character references...
