"in the land of boys, he died old at twenty-five"
By Carolyn Kittle
To the glowing reviews that precede this one, I boldly declare "Ditto!" Mr. Bourret's delivery of truth both shocks and educates as it deeply and appropriately reaches to the depths of the soul of the reader. This book should be required reading for all in the position to commit our country's greatest treasure, the lives of its sons and daughters, into battle.

The poignant reflections in this work reveal a rare ability to articulate the realities of war and the ongoing struggles to deal with those recollections. Mr. Bourret's words describe the experiences and the consequences of war with uncomfortable honesty and clarity. Like few before him, his nearly five decades' long journey to healing has given insight and understanding to the rest of us. I found the third poem particularly descriptive of my own journey in dealing with the loss of my brother in Vietnam.

No anecdotes of war, but rather the raw truths of war
By AZDanetta
I read this in little bits because the writing is so intense and raw that I could only handle bits at a time. The writing is wonderful. His similies and adjectives are exactly on target, and his writing evokes intense feelings. I think it is educational, as well, in that it makes one consider aspects of conflict not normally thought of. The ending of lives is graphically evoked, but also the after-effects on the soldiers who live and on the the families who have lost a child/brother/spouse or have had their loved one return changed.

The author's writing has that eternal existential aspect to it that I think separates it from other war writings that I have read. No anecdotes, but feelings that reverberate in Big Time and Big Space.

A Book Worth Reading
By Mary Pat DeVito
The author served in Viet Nam almost 50 years ago and he is still working out the loss of life and innocence in this beautifully written group of poems. Mr. Bourret captures the pain of not just the soldier, but his parents, partner and siblings. Their sorrow lingers forever. The poems form a coherent narrative. One is struck by how random death can be on the battlefield. One young man is dead, but his comrade lives on to remember. As we continue to send young people to battle, we must all think of the very long term implications for the individuals and for society.
