About the Author
Lynda G. Bullerwell resides in Texas with her husband, Tim and her Autistic son, Junior. She is also the proud Mother of two daughters, and 3 beautiful grandchildren. Lynda has been writing poetry for over 30 years and considers it her passion and a release for emotions since she was a child. Lynda released a collection of poetry entitled “Into the Light” published on October 16, 2013 by Water Forest Press, and has been published in literary magazines including Hudson View, Skyline Review, Epiphany Magazine, Writefromwrong, Miracle e-zine and Struggle magazine.

Beautiful and Inspiring Poetry

A Review of Crackers in Bed : A Collection of Poems by Lynda Bullerwell
In her second collection of poetry, Lynda Bullerwell gives us selections that are ethereal, poignant and reflective of that delicate balance between love and hate, joy and sorrow, life and death, childhood and adulthood, and love and loss. Her poetry is multi-faceted and exhibits layers of meaning in every line.
Many of her poems speak of the co-existence of love and pain so seamlessly, as in the title poem. “Pain trickles slowly like hydration for an i.v. as life flows back in through transfusions of love.” And in “Blowing Out the Candles”, she speaks in mournful tones of waiting for a reunion that will never come, and having to “close thoughts away in the cupboard as if nothing ever happened.” We see how well this poet understands love, and how the touch of a lover can temper the harsh realities of life (in “Softening the Lines) and how it feels to give one’s heart away so freely, only to have it returned as damaged goods (“Unconditional”). Lynda Bullerwell effortlessly captures what eludes so many other poets: the ability to describe how it really feels to be in love. “You can never, ever have too much love or poetry, for they are one in the same, and as vital as oxygen or the beating of this heart.” (“Poetic Transfusion”). In the poem “Wet Paint”, we are given pure sensuality when the poet tells us that “There is something about whispers under the covers anticipating traces of fingertips upon waiting curves that makes me miss you more.”
Her poems about poets and the art of writing poetry are just as stunning as those about love. “There is something beautiful about an unfinished poem swirling in my sleep, churning thoughts like butter more delectable with age” (“A Novel Idea”). One of the most beautiful pieces in the collection, “If Not For Flowers”, is nothing short of exquisite, showcasing Lynda’s exceptional talent and ability to create pictures in the reader’s mind with phrases that describe “art flowing like tumbleweeds across barren plains/shaky adjectives reverberating from willows into the very beat of a breaking heart just aching for the revelation of another perfect sunrise….”
I was able to relate on a very personal level to “Ghost Town”, which calls to mind the very powerful effect that listening to music has on me. The poet perfectly captures that feeling that music imparts to me that no other medium does because it has the ability to take “pain from the tattered souls leaving new breath making misers into kings with only a touch of laughter and a few scattered chords to linger on…”
Her ode to Sylvia Plath laments the fact that Plath had to “flutter away, like April does when the flowers have bloomed”, here “to bloom only for a season”, but leaving her mark on every poet in some way “to pull us down with you to lie in your words like the flowers you left.”
Lynda Bullerwell is far too humble, thinking herself and her poems not quite measuring up to the greats like Poe, Dickinson, Plath and Barrett Browning. The irony here is that she is all of those poets, and then some. She desires to write something memorable (“Her”) and as “this woman who can’t really call herself a poet, yet” (“In the Corner at Starbucks”) to “feel it in my soul deep down where the pounding won’t stop until keys click out thoughts that stick in your throat, burn you, from the inside to get out”, asking “What will it take to make it real”. This book makes it real for me.

A Review of Crackers in Bed a book of poems by Lynda Bullerwell
“Like poets I have loved/ that never loved me back” are two lines from a poem in this wonderful volume of poetry from a poet whom readers love for her wide range and multi-dimensional work. She speaks of how “that muse envy strikes” and it is true of most poets. We think we are poets and then read works of the greats, those famous ballad poets of old days, the Beat generation poets of mid-century and then the modern day poets and we say to ourselves, “I wish I had written that.” I often feel that way when I read this woman’s poetry. Her range and ease with words is amazing.
She mentions Sylvia Plath’s “milk and honey skin/ was too pure for this wind/ too fragile for winter…and when the green is gone…I don’t believe poets string syllables/ into pitch perfect assonance/only when their hearts are broken.” But it is so hard for poets to write happy, and somehow Lynda is an exception to the rule---Plath wrote of the darkened depths of manic depression so well, maybe better than anyone ever has, but Lynda does both so proficiently and is able to master “happy” because with much of her poetry “Life flows back in/ through transfusions of love.” In the end, real, sustainable love can override the bad emotional feelings from the past that (like guests who wear out their welcome) never know when to leave.
And she has such astute perceptions of life. In “Ghost Town” she says “Take the slow train to reality because there is no colder place.” Figurative language—which Lynda uses so well in her works-- is why we want not only to read but to feel the beauty of the words, and yet in that beautiful ugliness of her darker pieces emerges the reality that is literal, tragic and painful.
In this book, Lynda Bullerwell is definitely “art wrapped in poetry” and she is a “gypsy mama” covering so much ground; her words moving from theme to theme, dream to dream, treading through the darkest of heartaches to the softest syllables of the light of love. The bond she has with vibrant imagery is (as her poems express) is “like the bond, strong/ between a Mother/and her child.”
As I read Lynda’s poems, my thoughts echo those of the poem “Her.” In it she relates, “I want to write that classic; / the one people remember; / the one that leaves you different than when you came. “It seems Lynda’s poems in Crackers in Bed do just that---and in a very positive and inspirational way. Readers will absorb themselves in this book to the extent that they will never want to come out of it.

because they are like listening to a favorite song

You see this poet's heart. As someone who doesn't really write poetry, I sometimes find it too dark and moody or hard to interpret, but Lynda's work is deep and poignant yet an honest breath of fresh air. I find myself re-reading certain poems, because they are like listening to a favorite song.
