Seven Last Words, by Terry Minchow-Proffitt, Rebecca Starks

Christ’s final words from the cross—the seven sayings from the Gospels—have a compelling resonance. They have been pondered anew throughout the millennia by Christians and non-Christians alike the world over. Forged within the crucible of suffering, they have the capacity to awaken, to transform our way of beholding God and one another. In Seven Last Words, poet and pastor Terry Minchow-Proffitt gives us seven poems based on these sayings, along with an in-depth interview with Mud Season Review. With brevity that begs to be savored, Seven Last Words renders a powerful portal into the love that continues to radiate during the darkest of times. “These are some of the most profoundly meaningful poems I have read in a long time—as a Jew, as a poet, as a citizen of the planet—because of the way in which they meet, head-on, the conflict between devotion and rebellion when it comes to Christ.” ~From the Foreword by poet Matthew Lippman (The New Year of Yellow, Monkey Bars, American Chew, Salami Jew) “There is no generic language for grief, anger, or hope. That’s what is so refreshing about this collection of poems. It takes us back to the cross . . .” ~From the Afterword by theologian Belden Lane (The Solace of Fierce Landscapes, Landscapes of the Sacred, Ravished by Beauty, Backpacking with the Saints)

A Rare Gift
By Timothy W. Brock
The ability to examine a familiar text (or series of texts) from a fresh perspective is a rare gift. In this book, Terry Minchow-Profitt clearly demonstrates this gift. As a pastor, a poet, and a spiritual directors, Terry has the rare ability to weave the raw human emotions associated with the seven last words of Jesus and with elements of his own story of illness and suffering to create beautiful narrative and poetry. In this book, Terry helps us to read these familiar Good Friday texts in a fresh light while showing how these passages have also "read" his life...and can "read" our lives as well. This book is an excellent resource for Lenten/Easter reflection. Persons of faith who are experiencing pain and suffering would also find a kindred spirit in Terry's story and poetry.

By Drew Phillips
So, I just finished the poems for the third time, been listening to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” on repeat. (That may be too predictable-given the prominence locale and voice). I am moved and challenged and encouraged. I find the honest expressions of faith and humanity in these lines to be a bolster for the hard seasons.
The concluding author's interview is riveting and insightful. I could hear Terry responding and smiling, humbly, but knowing he just dropped serious wisdom. I find poets and people who interview poets to be my favorite interviewers/ees. They understand which questions to ask to gain the depth of the authors.
“From the garden to the tree we’re all rigged for reprieve” and “The one word that death cannot bear and fear cannot shake: Consummation”
These are two of the best lines I've read in ages and I’m not just saying that because I love Terry.

By Daye D. Phillippo
"Come to me, Lord, those nights/ when you might find/me at a loss" begins the fifth poem of the cycle, and who hasn't felt that at some point? In these insightful poems, Minchow-Proffitt juxtaposes our every day struggles for meaning and relationship with those of Christ's as embodied in his last spoken words from the Cross. These poignant poems remind us of how vitally alive and relevant those words, spoken over 2,000 years ago, still are for us today. The poems employ humor to serious ends in a voice that rings true to human experience making them accessible even to those readers who don't usually read poetry. Interwoven with the poems are Emily Mitchell's colorful, nature-inspired works of art, and the volume concludes with a interview with the author that explores the meditative life of faith and writing. A lovely book!
