"Ann Bracken creates a vibrant dialogue with her reader. Her emotional vocabulary is wholeheartedly offered to us like a gift to the world. Bracken's strength comes from an equilibrium between idea and performance-interior and exterior lives, smartly drawn. With a strong voice, vitally engaged, she presents characters and behavior without judgment. From the Author
The Altar of Innocence is a book about claiming your voice. The poems in this volume, based on events in my life, explore the 60s culture of secrecy surrounding alcoholism and depression and their effects on children who witnessed the roller-coaster ride of mental illness and self-medication. In writing these poems, I spent a lot of time analyzing my parents' style of communication, conflict, and managing illness, all the while considering how their unspoken lessons unfolded in my own marriage. I explore these issues through three lenses: conjectures about what my mother might have felt, recollections of key events in my childhood and adolescence, and my own journey through depression, chronic migraines, and a destructive marriage. Though my path and my mother's are braided with similar experiences, I was able to find the gifts so often hidden in the dark night of the soul we call depression.

Her mother’s beautiful watercolor graces the cover of this book of poems ...
By A Customer
Her mother’s beautiful watercolor graces the cover of this book of poems that searches a voice for women who have been marginalized in a number of different ways. My favorite poems are the ones in which the writer peels back layers to reveal a person—like her grandmother in “Nested”—or an object—a new use for a broken ornament in the poem “Repurposed.” These works are honest and brave.

Poetry as a coat from the cold. Ann Bracken ...
By Mary L. Van Beuren
Poetry as a coat from the cold. Ann Bracken offers humor, grace, empathy, and pure companionship to those of her family who suffered, to herself, and to all her readers who struggle with the pain of alcoholism, depression, and/or an imploding marriage. I, for one, am grateful for her bravery and her stalwart unwillingness to surrender to anything but the consolation of poetry.
