About the Author
A recipient of three Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships of Literature, Barbara Crooker is the author of five books, including Gold; More; Line Dance, winner of the Paterson Prize for Literary Excellence; and Radiance, finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize. Her poems have won the WB Yeats Society of New York Award, the Thomas Merton Poetry of the Sacred Award, and the New Millennium Writing’s Y2K competition. Her work appears in a variety of literary journals and anthologies, including Common Wealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania and The Bedford Introduction to Literature.

Selected Poems by Barbara Crooker is a “must have” for anyone who delights in language, form, and extraordinary insight. Writing about a life not so different
from ours, she manages with uncanny clarity to see into her subject as many of us do not, illuminating essence whether family, seasons, gardening, travel, food,
or loss. Her work is rooted firmly in life, and Crooker lives her life fully.
From “ At the Cimitière de Monmartre,” for example, after strolling among the graves of the famous, she and her husband find a wrought iron bench, enjoy a feast of camembert, pain de compagne, a kilo of cherries, “when for a sweet moment, I loved you so completely, /when I die, I want our ashes to mingle; bury us in earth,/plant a rose bush/ etc.” Love blossoms even in the cemetery. Or consider
the poems for her son David who has autism. Crooker writes compassionately but realistically. In poems such as “The Mother of a Handicapped Child Dreams of Respite,” she lists all the ways she could escape, then tucks in the penultimate line
“ I will dance in satin slippers at my broken boy’s wedding” followed by “I will drive clear to the Pacific and never come back.” or “ Driving Under the Clerestory of Leaves” where Crooker describes driving David to school, explains how he is developmentally delayed, mildly retarded, how she waits for him, tries to write, “turn straw into gold,” and speaks of the beauty of the “mixed hardwood in full conflagration. And the last three lines: The architect who made these trees was sleeping when he made this boy. And my heart, like the leaves, burns and burns.
This collection of 101 poems taken from 10 chapbooks and including the new later poems, perhaps more meditative and reflective, taking an account of a life as in the last poem, “ The Mothers,” from the profane “to the sacred, the opening between two worlds, the way we all came in, part of the wheel, the hoop, the great turning. “

New Collection from Barbara Crooker: Yes!

From the first poem to the last, Selected Poems is a gorgeous collection of Barbara Crooker's work. Crooker is one of the most observant poets writing today, producing exquisite poems that celebrate the small details most of us overlook. In poems that describe elements of everyday life, from grated cheese to fried eggplant, migrating hawks to multiflora roses, small upstate towns to the Montmartre in Paris, she shows us how each small thing offers meaning to the joys and sorrows of life and death. Who else sees the erotic in a jar of homemade strawberry jam, writes a crown of sonnets about writing a crown of sonnets, and helps us see the truth in even the mundane? "But aren't we all refugees, searching for our lives, / and don't we all become orphans in the end" she asks. And she provides answers that may or may not be comforting, in image after image, poem after poem.

In her poem Obbligato, Barbara Crooker writes “How we forget to be grateful.” Reading her Selected Poems reminded me of how grateful I am for the talents of this poet—her humor, her at times brutal honesty, her ability to find the unexpected yet perfect word, her patented after-all-these–years-we-are-are-still-in-love poems, her ability to mourn and not lose hope. All of these traits and more are evident in spades in this wonderful collections of poems from four decades of her many chapbooks and several uncollected poems. There are poems in this collection that any Crooker fan will recognize as old friends, poems like Ordinary Life and The Lost Children. There are also new treasures like Sadness Falls. Those new and old to Crooker’s work should place this volume in their shopping cart posthaste.
