In straightforward fashion, University of Maryland geography and environmental studies professor Biehler produces a lively account (not for the squeamish) of our oft-unseen, unwanted household companions, and what our interactions with them reveal about humans. With a foreword by William Cronon, the book educates the general public about some of the smaller organisms who share human habitations: house flies, bedbugs, German cockroaches, and rats. Both common and annoying, these creatures enjoy the repasts provided by humans, repaying them by spreading disease and filth. Biehler charts the growing efforts to control these pests, and shows how such efforts, in the long term, produce even more robust pests. The struggle to control and shape the domestic environment also illuminates class and race barriers; as the author demonstrates, the consequences of cohabitation with vermin often fall most heavily on the poorest, a fact that doesn't seem to trouble the upper classes. For readers who want even more detail, a detailed bibliography is provided. 27 illus. (Oct.)

Urban ecology

(Disclaimer: I work at the same university as the author.) There are all sorts of books out there that attempt to document the urban experience, this is one that integrates social, political, environmental, and economic history through the lens of pest control. Biehler does a fine job of walking the reader through the successes (some) and failures (many) of attempts to control the big four household pests: flies, bedbugs, cockroaches, and rats, highlighting the interaction of the many forces at work when dealing with all those critters that nobody likes. Racial and economic inequality, social attitudes, political and scientific prejudices, nature and evolution all play a part. Very readable, with an interesting arrangement and extensive documentation.

Makes you feel lucky if have never seen a cockroach in your life...

This book has its moments of brilliance, but too often it is a hard slog through tedious writing. Worth reading for better understanding the interplay between the efforts of the authorities and the demand of the society they thought they were helping. A highlight is the transition from "this is a landlord problem" to "this is a problem that. can only be solved by empowering the people". Another highlight is the understanding where communal space ends and private living quarters start. And how much this interface defined the pest control approaches.

Imagine daily battles with germs carried by flies, itchy bites left by bedbugs, allergies caused by cockroaches, and physical attacks by rats. Dawn Biehler’s Pests in the City explores particular American urban environments that endured resilient and persistent infestations of these pests beginning in 1900. She addresses why poor neighborhoods and public housing projects endure more infestations than other areas. She argues that frequent infestations are linked as much to private and public hygiene practices as social and political policies. Successful pest-control requires ecological, political, and social awareness.
Part one of the book examines modernization of domestic spaces within poor communities between 1900 and the 1960s. As the fields of medical entomology and ecology grew to incorporate urban environments in the twentieth century, health authorities and social reformers became more interested in urban infestations. However, modernization failed to uphold promises of safe and healthy environments. Poor, predominantly segregated neighborhoods and public housing projects continued to experience infestations due to racial injustice, disinvestment from government agencies and private owners, and discriminatory housing policies.
Part two explores how environmental and social activism beginning in the mid-1960s changed pest-control methods and policies to include more ecological approaches versus dangerous and haphazard pesticide applications. Also, while using pests as symbols for environmental injustice, many activists argued that the political and social structures allowing infestations to exist and reoccur deserved attention.
Biehler’s engaging writing style and vivid illustrations of the pests’ worlds simultaneously inspires empathy for those having lived with pests and the pests themselves. Her extensive notes include references to public documents, popular material, and a multitude of articles, books, and dissertations. This book serves as a great example of how environmental conditions cross human-created boundaries. A lot can be learned by acknowledging the relationship between the physical environment, human health, and social justice.
