Review
"BROKEN PLACES succeeds as the gritty memoir of a woman who was sexually assaulted when she was young and the author's story of survival will surprise the reader because of its candidness and unexpected ending."
~IndieReader

"Broken Places by Rachel Thompson is a very descriptive, well-written memoir of abuse...Author Rachel Thompson has a well-developed vocabulary for describing one of the worst experiences of her life -- sexual abuse at the hands of her pedophile neighbor...Broken Places should help other people realize that they don't have to be ashamed or embarrassed by what happened."
~Readers' Favorite

"The book is deeply personal, and the author discusses her emotions in a very rational, honest, and compelling way...It was very inspiring and splendidly written."

From the Author
Broken Places is a work of nonfiction essays, poetry, and prose where author Rachel Thompson opens her soul and invites you in for a visit. It's vulnerable, it's raw honesty, it's no-holds barred. After the enormously favorable reader and reviewer response to Broken Pieces, her first collection of serious essays, Rachel realized she had more to share. Most readers know her as the funny girl, but this shows that she can go into those long buried rooms, the ones we lock up deep inside, and share. 'These stories were there. I simply had to wait until my brain caught up.' ~ Rachel Thompson. Rachel is the creator and founder #SexAbuseChat on Twitter, collaborator on the #NoMoreShame Project anthology series, and an advocate for sexual abuse survivors.

Haunting, raw and honest.
By Tess Thompson
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am a first time reader of Rachel Thompson's work but am a poetry and essay lover, so I looked forward to reading Broken Places. I was not disappointed. In a series of essays and poetry she writes of her childhood sexual abuse, of the abuser who lived next door, and of how it shaped the person and writer she grew to be. The writing is raw and honest but despite the subject matter is told in a way that even a faint of heart reader of two daughters (me) could read. This work is a peek into the author's soul and mind as she writes of what many of us can't imagine but way too many have experienced. As I write this, given the statistics, a child is experiencing the unspeakable. Ms. Thompson puts words to the unspeakable, thus giving a voice to the voiceless.

This is a haunting but important book in which brave writing about a nearly impossible subject indeed examines the broken places left by a monster's actions on an innocent child. Her story will make you angry, sad and frightened for all the little girls and boys in your communities. Perhaps it will make all of us a little more aware of the monsters that live amongst us. I suppose at its core this is why writing about taboo and difficult subjects like childhood abuse is so important. Experiences shared through words can heal the similarly wounded and give the fortunate unscathed the information that might help us identify the monsters that live next door, or down the street, or across town. It opens us to the truth. As communities it is our job to protect our innocent but without truth, without knowledge we are unable to do so. Telling the truth is powerful. And Ms. Thompson does it well.

Hit so close to home!!!
By lsmoore43
This was a hard read for me. It hit so close to home in areas that I thought I'd put way behind me. Now I know where the nightmares come from....

Rachel Thompson took on a task that touches the heart in ways I've never read before. This book is extremely well written and told with such grace and feeling that you turn the pages and reach the end before you expect it. You can feel a little girls pain and fear. The poetry was beautiful and I don't usually read books with poetry in them. This one was pure art from beginning to end.

How do you deal with a neighbor that you have to face every single day of your childhood after he has touched you inappropriately. When it seems everyone is watching every move you make. After you grow up the things that happen are still with you no matter how hard you try to hide it. The nightmares that wake you up in a cold sweat. Knowing you didn't deserve what happened but still blaming yourself in so many ways.

I loved this book even though it made me cry for a childhood lost. It made me remember things that I had chosen to forget. Whether it's a neighbor, a family member or date rape or all three, you are not to blame. You are just an innocent child who had no control over the things that happen to you. You're suppose to be carefree, happy and enjoy your life. You are suppose to be protected. Sometimes the very ones who are suppose to protect us are abusers though. Sometimes they are not there for YOU and they do blame YOU when it's them that should be taking care of your pains and fears.

Anyone who has ever been abused or molested or even if it has never happened to you, you should read this book and the first one: Broken Pieces. Both are great books and in so many ways help you understand that you are innocent or not to look down on anyone who has been hurt in such a terrible way.

Rachel Thompson has written a heartfelt story that I could not stop reading even when I thought I could not read another word. It is such a touching story. Thank you for writing this. It helped!!!

I was given this book. For no reason other than the author is a sweet person. I left a honest review that has nothing to do with the fact that it was a gift from the author. It's just a great book.

From BROKEN PIECES to BROKEN PLACES: Another Brilliant 5-STAR Masterpiece
By Frank Feather (CEO Futurist)
From BROKEN PIECES to BROKEN PLACES: Another Brilliant 5-STAR Masterpiece

Ernest Hemingway would be proud of this masterpiece. Let me explain why.

Rachel Thompson's previous book, BROKEN PIECES (published 2013), was an instant best-seller on Amazon and still is. It has won many awards and has more than a hundred 5-star reviews! In my own review, I called it a classic in its genre, being a non-fiction account of the author's courageous personal story of survival in piecing her life back together after childhood sexual abuse.

This follow-up book, BROKEN PLACES is another gripping and brave book, and again superbly written. It succeeds in putting more of Rachel's "broken pieces" together in remarkable fashion as she describes her journey of survival. Some "broken pieces" still show through, and they can trigger unpleasant flash-backs when daily life provokes unwelcome memories, which she conveys in compelling ways. As she writes, "I wrote from my gut, opened my veins, and bled."

BROKEN PLACES is well structured and flows fast. It examines her life through aspects of mind, body, and soul. She weaves these themes together in sparkling prose, interspersed with relevant and astonishing pieces of poetry. Despite the serious subject matter, as a piece of literature this book is a distinct pleasure to read.

Here are just a few nuggets: "... the honeyed sweetness one savors on the tongue, mourning every swallow, the lost sugar of a fool" and "The bad thing takes your brain hostage, fills it with the detritus of denial; becomes dead leaves waiting for the deep scratch of the rake." And this profound statement: "He took pieces of my soul, from places I will never recover."

A singularly perceptive line comes from Ernest Hemingway himself, which Rachel cites early in the book as follows: "The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places." That is why I say Hemingway would be proud of this literary masterpiece. That one line summarizes the book, and Rachel's journey.

Overall, Rachel Thompson comes out of her trauma strongly at the "broken places" in her life, which she brilliantly recounts. This book will help the healing process of anyone who suffered childhood sexual abuse. It also is valuable to anyone who knows someone who suffered such abuse and/or is somewhere along the journey to healing.

More than that, BROKEN PLACES truly is magnificent literature, which anyone will enjoy. I highly recommend it, with another much-deserved 5-Stars, and I feel sure it is destined to win many awards. If you didn't already read BROKEN PIECES, then I strongly suggest you buy both books as a set that you will be proud to own. Reading the two in sequence will give you a profoundly rewarding experience.
