Dylan Bassett’s The Unpainted Shore was beautiful, yet deeply sad

C. Dylan Bassett’s The Unpainted Shore was beautiful, yet deeply sad. His words and the setting really reflected a feeling of loss and grief. I love that although they are short, separate poems, they are tied together in such an elegant way. The collection is broken into four sections. Each section possesses a different form, conveying a different feeling in each. The first section, “October,” has a short paragraph on each page, positioned in the center of the page. “October” seems to convey the thoughts of Basset right in the wake of his father’s death, and his interactions with the world around him. In the wake of loss, it’s as though everything outside of him has changed, has taken on a different feeling or appearance. The following section is titled “Lake Effect,” and the poems are placed on only one side of the pages and are written in short sentences, divided by empty lines. This section seems to reflect more on his father and his father’s body. Within this section, Dylan seems to connect his feelings of grief to the nature around him. The third section is called “Enclosures,” and the poems are once again placed only on one side of the page. This section seems to center upon himself as “a body.” I feel that as he refers to himself as just a body, he distances himself from the physical world. It’s almost as if his mind splits away and what is left is just a body that moves about numbly. The weather appears prevalently to mirror his feelings of numbness. I found the form of the last section, “Elegy,” the most intriguing. In this concluding part of the collection, the poems on the left side of the pages appear in short, broken lines, with no capitalized letters. On the right side of the pages, the poems are positioned at the bottom, a paragraph placed within the pages. I found the contrasting forms of poetry in this section beautifully mysterious, pulling you back and forth through the mind of someone trying to comprehend and cope with loss. I really enjoyed Bassett’s collection of poetry, each poem possessing a different movement and feeling, but all having an amazing potency.

C Dylan's Bassett's poetry is not exactly accessible. But that's not a bad thing. The subject matter he deals with in "The Unpainted Shore" is grief, a feeling and experience that is not easily understood. So why should poetry about grappling with grief and attempting to grasp it be easily understood? It would cheapen the poems.
Take this passage for example:
"It was October after my father died. All the fountains sealed. I walked through a garden unapologetically. Correction: I was the garden and it was painful to be a body. Dark birds covered me. Correction: I was a murder of dark birds moving from roof to roof. Correction: I was a murmur. I drank the rain."
The first sentence is easily understood. But after that, the rest is just abstract thought married to concrete images. What does it mean? I'm still not entirely sure what Bassett is trying to communicate, but I'm beginning to understand what the text means to me. My advice concerning this piece of art is to be prepared to revisit it over and over before you reach any level understanding. It's poetry—four longer form poems to be exact— so you can easily read the entire book in one sitting, but you will not absorb it in the first sitting. The text will absorb you, but you will not absorb the text. Bassett's words and images are beautiful, yet haunting. So if you like gorgeous poetry that explores complex humanity, buy this book and read it over and over again.

An Enjoyable Journey

I'm not much of a poem person but I found C Dylan Bassett's "The Unpainted Shore" to be something more than just a book of 'poems'. I found this collection of poems to be an artistic journey through human emotion that truly affected me on an emotional level. Where I normally would be frustrated by my inability to understand the meaning behind his poems, I found their abstract nature to be appealing and appropriate for their purpose. The author uses this book of poems to describe and portray the emotion of grief, an abstruse emotion not capable of being suitably defined with just concrete ideas.
C. Dylan Bassett divides the poems into 4 different sections each seeming to view grief in a different way. Though it appears that he is writing from his own viewpoint of grief and drawing from personal experience, I believe Bassett meant for each section and poem to be interpreted by the reader in their own unique way. The abstractness of the poems allows the ideas to be interpreted on a personal level. Though I never found myself coming to understand exactly what his poems were saying, they led me to a place of reflection that gave me greater understanding of the roll of grief in my own life. I would recommend this book (and author) to anyone who likes to think, for his poems are a spark that will light the fire of wonderment and contemplation. I believe "The Unpainted Shore" will prove to be a valuable read for anyone.
