About the Author
SARAH CORTEZ, resident of Houston and member of the Texas Institute of Letters, is the author of two poetry collections, How to Undress a Cop and Cold Blue Steel, and winner of the PEN Texas literary award in poetry. Her mixed-genre, breakthrough memoir, Walking Home: Growing up Hispanic in Houston, was published by Texas Review Press in 2012. She has edited six anthologies, ranging from crime fiction to memoir to poetry.

I enjoyed this anthology with a beautiful collection of poems that honor Mexico's past. Those of us who have loved that country over the years grieve for its people who suffer from today's violent times. But there is also hope in these poems. And possibilities...it is still a country of incredible color; you can still find the same mangoes and papaya and mamay in the mercado; people in small towns still smile and greet strangers and provide assistance without hesitation; the monarchs still make their annual trek to Michoacan; the mariachi bands are still playing in the plazas; and church bells still toll day and night. If you look beyond the headlines, you can find the Mexico of this poetry. Seth Strickland says in the poem, "A Certain Lie About the Phoenix" that the bird nests in Mexico, leaving open the hope that it will someday rise again. In "We are of a Tribe" by Alberto Rios, there is this to remember: "We plant seeds in the ground and dreams in the sky...Traveler look up. Stay awhile. Know that you always have a home here." In spite of today's problems, the Mexico of the past, as revealed in these lovely poems, is still there -- you just have to look harder for it sometimes. A nice collection for anyone who already loves the country or who just wants to glimpse its vibrant colors.

you want the best for her but are wary of getting too close

We whom have grown up in Border States have always had complicated and sultry feelings toward Mexico. The offerings by the many distinguished writers in this anthology embody many of those through histories of witnessing and experience. The poems, truly remarkable in their diversity of content and form, articulate the remorse’s of the loss of “ole Mexico” and the sentimentality of remembrances toward, “…. an old girlfriend,” to quote Jerry Bradley in the comments section: “….you want the best for her but are wary of getting too close. No matter how charming and alluring she seems, she is always capable of turning on you and breaking your heart. Ever since I read sage/poet, William Jay Smith’s collection about the trail of tears, Cherokee Lottery, I have come to believe that there is no better way to write history than with splendid poetry. Herein, is a collection that rises to that level: a treasury of moving, historical testimonies, each observation penned by many of the finest poets of the Southwest and beyond.
