About the Author
Chana Bloch, the author of award-winning books of poetry, translation, and scholarship, is Professor Emerita of English at Mills College, where she taught for over thirty years and directed the Creative Writing Program. Bloch is co-translator of The Song of Songs (Modern Library, 2006), and of poets, Yehuda Amichai and Dahlia Ravikovitch.

Poetry for right now and forever

Chana Bloch's latest collection is mindblowing, with a blast of insight on every page, and all in low-key, economical, precise language that doesn't waste a syllable. Clear-eyed in the face of illness, aging, heartbreak of all sorts, she celebrates the things that really matter: love, friendship, children, justice, and whatever can grow and rejuvenate in a damaged world.

Unlike many other new and selected collections, Swimming in the Rain contains a generous section of new poems, while at the same time encompassing the best work of four previous volumes, allowing readers to see the scope and breadth of Chana Bloch's work, which ranges from the Holocaust, the turbulent sixties and seventies, the complicated current situation of Israel to personal narratives: child rearing, love, divorce, mental illness, cancer. With their stunning imagery, economy of language, and deep insight, these are poems that will break your heart and mend it all over again on every page. A must-read for lovers of contemporary poetry.
