Review
“What’s important to Ochester is rendering the world in our art as we find it — not as we would like it to be. There’s no need for long-winded puffery when this life offers such wonders as the ‘two young toothless men’ singing Stairway to Heaven ‘with enormous gusto’ in ‘karaoke night at the serbian club, south side, pittsburgh: a haiku.’ Ochester’s ‘sugar run road’ makes an argument for poetry less as a kind of alchemy where the real is remade as art but rather poetry as witness sharing the beauty and wonders of the real that we too often fail to notice.”—Kristofer Collins, Pittsburgh Magazine

"Sugar Run Road is an inspired, American epic."—M.L. Williams, Miramar

Review
“I'm always scolding Ed for not stepping into the front ranks of American poets, where he belongs, till finally I realize that A. it's not up to him and B. he's already there. I could praise his plain speech, his tenderness and loyalty, his incredible memory, his creation of poetic world to draw sustenance from, his devotion to the local, his deep and ancient values, disguised as rebellion and satire, but I want to praise the mystery that is at the heart of his poems, how he can create beauty out of violence, waste and bad rhetoric we are all surrounded by, not unlike the farmers of New Jersey who planted their tomatoes in the raw sewage being disgorged from the giant pipes where the Giants now play football; the best tomatoes his Uncle Frank ate. He has a love of complexity but he dislikes confusion and obscurity. Finally, he is a poet and there are very few of them who brings wisdom to his work. I want to praise in particular "Myer Country Motel," "Hambone," "Ancient Music," "Hi Gertrude," "September Rain," and "For Britt." This is an amazing book.” (Gerald Stern)

I think what I enjoy most about this collection is how local the writing is. Ochester writes about Pittsburgh, his home, old campuses, etc., in a way that makes you feel as if you know those streets, those rooms, those people. He also works major historical figures into his writing, from Andrew Carnegie to Nero. These allusions work together to create interesting and lasting images that are presented over and over again in fresh, new ways throughout the work. Highly recommend.

'Sugar Run Road,' a bitingly funny approach to Pittsburgh poetry
By Anon.
Ed Ochester's latest collection, "Sugar Run Road," is a delightfully funny journey into the Pittsburgh environment. Ochester's from New York (a fact he makes abundantly clear), and compares the two frequently; the first poem "Steel City" envies the poets of New York who have so many weird people to see, and ironically laments that Pittsburgh boasts of the Original Hot Dog Shop instead. This collection's broken into three sections, and all of them are indebted to the city that bequeathed them. Ochester's wit and humor carries throughout, as the poet recounts strange tales from family reunions, illustrates a haiku about karaoke at a Serbian nightclub, and frequently references major Pittsburgh sports figures. Another highlight is "What You Should Know About the Emperor Nero," which compares the emperor to the worst open mic night poet you've ever heard. Ochester's poems are funny and have some bite behind them, so I would definitely check this out.

I must say that I am disappointed in my reading
By Timothy Gavin
I purchased Sugar Run Road for two reasons. First, because I wanted to add a new poet's name to my personal library. Second, the reviews were quite favorable. As I read through the poems, I must say that I am disappointed in my reading. I find the poems are flat, internally inchoate, and obtuse. Many of the poems attempt to be whimsical but fall short because it was too obvious that the speaker of the poem was attempting to be whimsical. In addition, there is too much name dropping: Harvard, Carnegie, Frank O'Hara, New York, Catullus, Salinger, Pittsburgh, Aristotle, and Plato. Also, there are attempts at political rants in which the poet chastises capitalism and the Mellon family without developing his own true idea of social justice. Also, the poems are disappointing because they are too ambiguous and fail to bridge rhythm, image, and sound in order to support the speaker's vision, but then again there seems to be no vision. I believe if these poems were not written by a poet of the establishment of the writers workshop, the book would never have been published. There are too many other worthwhile collections of poetry available - so don't waste your time or money on Sugar Run Road.
