Collage Poetics as Critical Practice

Throughout her distinguished career, Rachel Blau DuPlessis has explored hybridity in its many forms, working at the interstices of modern/postmodern, sacred/secular, long poem/lyric, text/image. Graphic Novella continues this practice, exploring the role of genre in mediating our contemporary moment. The second of DuPlessis’s mixed media collage books (the first being The Collage Poems of Drafts), the genres in this text are many. Part long poem, part poetic sequence, part essay, part novella, part advertisement, part reportage, DuPlessis weaves these practices together to reveal their political and historical power while also turning that power against itself. “There are,” as the text tells us, “alternative plots,” a prospect both nefarious (plot as conspiracy, as malicious intent sprung upon the innocent) and utopian (plot as explanation, as memory, as the capacity to see beyond the image and grasp historical processes). Time emerges as a figure for this plot and a theme throughout the work, counterpuntally ringing against the immediacy of the image, figured through the cut-ups of camera and surveillance equipment. In the society of the hyperspectacle, DuPlessis seems to suggest, we are in dire need of alternative plots, even as we must remain hypervigilant against the easy consolation of a likely story. Graphic Novella offers us, through a poet’s eye and ear, an unlikely story, well worth our time and attention.
