Sylvia Plath in Devon: A Year's Turning is part memoir, part biography focusing on the fifteen months that Sylvia Plath lived in North Tawton, Devon from September 1961 to December 1962. This was an extraordinary time for Plath as she finished the proofs on her first novel The Bell Jar and in the autumn of 1962 produced most of her dazzling Ariel poems. Elizabeth Sigmund recalls the year of her friendship with Plath from their first meeting drinking tea to attending music concerts together. Gail Crowther considers the impact Plath's domestic life had on her creative work during this period drawing for the first time on unpublished letters , documents and previously unseen resources from a wide range of archives in the UK, US and Canada. What emerges is a unique and industrious picture of Plath as she settled into town life forging new friendships, giving birth to her second child, decorating her new home and producing some of the most memorable and powerful poetry of the 20th century.

A must-read gem!
By Eva L. Stenskar
I love this book! I think I've read most books written about Plath (and for sure everything published written by her). This is a little gem. If you believe this is "only" Elizabeth Sigmund's story of her friend again, then you're wrong. Yes, Sigmund has written previously about her friendship with Sylvia Plath, but this is so much more. It also shows a side of Plath that has been previously unexamined: Her daily life in Devon. Unlike so many books about Plath it points no fingers, yet manages to be very moving. You really get a more intimate look at Plath during her year in Devon. Kudos to both Elizabeth Sigmund and Gail Crowther for putting this book together, and the wonderful introduction written by Peter K. Steinberg. Anyone interested in Sylvia Plath ought to read it. One thing only, and there's a reason I mention this: On page 66 it says a Swedish photographer named Siv Arb came to take photos of Ted Hughes. Siv Arb, who passed away last month, was not a photographer but a poet, literary critic, and translator. She was the first person to translate Sylvia Plath's poems into Swedish, and in my opinion, the one who did the best job at it too. She wrote about her Devon visit in her introduction to the Swedish translation of Plath's poems, saying (and I am just paraphrasing here) that Plath joined her (Arb) and Hughes among the daffodils when she was done putting down the children for their nap time. She was also more upbeat than Hughes, and gave Arb her book Colossus.

A Sensitive and Smart Lit-Crit
By Fixed Stars Govern a Life
I had a hard time getting this book--the publisher could not fulfill the orders and so after a wait, I was able to get it through a third-party seller here.

Sylvia Plath in Devon: A Year's Turning is a valuable book for Plath-o-philes, although Plath scholars probably will not find a lot of new information here if they have been keeping up on Plath Profiles articles, the Sylvia Plath Information Blog, and have spent time in archives doing their own research. There are some valuable details as to context, dates of poems, etc. which might not be of interest to the average biographical reader.

While much of the writing is lovely (I especially appreciated the tasteful, sensitive ending), this is first and foremost a scholarly book, and therefore lacking in those substantive details that flesh out the facts and make it a readable story. It is unique in its structure, divided into four parts: an introduction by Peter K. Steinberg, a memoir by Elizabeth Sigmund, literary criticism by Gail Crowther, and the Appendix, which is a study of Elizabeth Sigmund's poem, "Shep-en-Mut", and how Sylvia Plath may or may not have been an unconscious driver informing the work.

The introduction contradicts itself a bit, building a case at first for the personal in Plath's writing, and then going toward reading her work for universal themes (the latter view is one that I espouse). It quotes a 17-year-old Plath in her desire to wrench out "a piece of hurt and beauty." While Plath at seventeen wrote better than most adults, God forbid any of us are held to live under our statements from that age and doomed to live under such a narrow confessional stereotype, as she has been. Another reviewer here noted the lack of detail and brevity by Sigmund, and this is the book's weak point, because of course detail is what the reader wants. I personally came to this book wanting to see and feel Devon, but never really got there in the detail. Elizabeth Sigmund only knew Plath a year, and over this year it was mentioned several times that writing---THE SUBJECT the reader cares about---was never discussed between them. We have all had relationships to know a year is long enough to get to know someone, but not necessarily to know them well. To know Plath outside of the main thing she did is interesting but leaves us wanting.

Sylvia Plath in Devon has some lovely color photographs, and this slim book feels good in the hands, inviting the scholar and Plath fan to take a second look at this important year, the most important year, of Plath's writing life.

In praise of a deeper understanding
By Suzanne Demko
The life, death, poetry and prose of Sylvia Plath have been the subject of countless accounts in the decades since her death. This book by Sigmund and Crowther carves out but a year in that life and work, but oh, what a year! Anyone who has had an interest in Plath will find much in this book to deepen their understanding of both the woman and the writer. Elizabeth Sigmund's memoir is loving, kind and fair. Gail Crowther's scholarship and insights are impeccable. Well worth the read!
