Swimming on Broken Ground is the story of Henry Nalbandian, the son of Armenian immigrants, payroll clerk at the Kern River oil field, and Ruthie Brown, a young African American cleaning woman at the county hospital. They meet on the night of the 1952 Bakersfield earthquake, the third most powerful earthquake in California recorded history. Together they face the disapproval of society against interracial relationships and the violent designs of two men, one a roughneck from the oil fields, and the other a pimp from the African American shanty community of Cottonwood. They embark on a journey into the Sierra Nevada, where they encounter history, both natural and human, and each other. Their story unfolds in a series of forty-one poems.

About the Author
Mark Chambers has been a cartographer for thirty years. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute with a MFA in photography, a former nuclear missile crewman, conscientious objector, political street artist, reptile enthusiast, and jazz-punk musician, Mark began writing in 2005. He had always expected that he would become a writer, and finally, forty years later, he did.

"Swimming on Broken Ground" is an urgent story told in pungent bursts of sparkling poetry filled with crystalline images like "starlight reflected in his eyes freezes" and "her eyes melted into chocolate from stone when she looked into his own." It is an old story masterfully told by a new voice in rhythmic, mystic, mythic, imagistic, majestic cadence that leaves this reader both delighted and uplifted. Historically accurate, inventive, and filled with pure descriptive prowess this small book is a treasure that grows more valuable with each successive reading.

A Must Read!

As I read through the pages, I pictured the life of these men and women in the 1950's and the intolerance for interracial relationships.
the Author paints a real yet hopeful picture of the lives of this young couple that allowed me to finish the book in just two sittings. The ironic message for me?
How a tragic Earthquake brought the most unlikely people together!
Thanks Mark Chambers for entertaining me and sharing an experience in the 1950's that I would have never known.......
