About the Author
Gary Zimmer was raised on a dairy farm in northeastern Wisconsin. He received training in dairy nutrition, earning a bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin and a masters degree from the University of Hawaii. For the last 25 years, Gary Zimmer has been developing ecological farming practices. In the fall of 1979, Gary and three partners started Midwestern Bio-Ag, now one of North America's foremost sustainable agriculture consulting groups. With its emphasis on education, Midwestern Bio-Ag currently works with more than 3,500 farms and has 75 trained consultants. Besides being president of Midwestern Bio-Ag, Gary has also managed the Bio-Ag Learning Center, a livestock and crop demonstration farm where he tests products and methods for successful biological farming. Otter Creek Organic Farm is also operated and co-owned with his son Nicholas. The 240-acre farm is certified organic and grows edible beans, corn and forages.

Accurate, scientific in a simple comprehensive manner

A book focusing in improving the soil quality in field farming. Very detailed but at the same time extremely coprehensible even for begginers in organic farming. Although the major reference of the book is concerning soils the writer offers a very practical approach to the whole aspect of sustainable organic farming.
It remains to me (an organic fruit farmer) to set all the knowledge offered in the book working in my tree farm.
Under the strictest examination it easily achieves 4 stars.

Great info, get the second book as its more complete and up to date. There are a few things that make what he is thinking more clear by reading this book, but the newer book is even better!

Good Infomation

This had some good information. However I felt that Mr. Zimmer was still too focused on tillage in this book. I think he should have had more emphasis on the positive side of limiting tillage and that really did not shine through as a message in this book. We see high erosion rates on our farm and since we went zero-till we have seen major improvements, that Mr. Zimmer talked of in his book, without any of the downsides he talks about when he becomes critical of zero-tillage agriculture.
