Very dense to read but LOTS of great information

Stay away from this book if you are expecting some sort of condensed, practical, and simple manual for safe highway driving, like the previous reviewer seems to have expected (I should point out that they are totally wrong about the words "speeding", "braking", etc. never being used. both of those words are key to many of this book's discussions and used countless times). Instead what this book offers is a detailed and techical defense of the author's strategies for highway optimization in order to prove that the topic deserves more attention in the Driver's ed field. I am sure that is why he spends the time to discuss and defend the books practical recommendations (and there are many) - since it seems to be written in that academic, driver's-ed-specialist, argumentative style. I personally don't care for that and am just interested in improving my driving, and I did not find the author's extra attention to detail to be an obstruction to reading comprehension like the last reviewer did.
If you give this book some patience, the author's very novel ideas about lane selection, speed choice, and safety tactics come through clear. I remember my driver's ed teacher showed me the "wide" mirror alignment (which the author calls the "SAE"mirror alignment) which Chapter 3 rails against at least for freeway usage. Not sure where I stand on that one but there's no doubt that this work is highly researched and valuable, though dense and technically rigorous.

In-depth examination of freeway driving - and only freeway driving

i have looked through a lot of driving/driver's ed books over the years and so I have something to compare this with. This book is definitely not a general book about "highway" driving (in the broad, proper context) - it is a very specialized, narrow, and in-depth discussion on FREEWAY driving, i.e. interstate/motorway/expressway driving, which is what is meant by "highway" though in some countries the word "highway" does not have that specific connotation.
With that said, if you are a commercial driver, DOT worker, cop, etc. or someone who simply uses the freeway a lot, this book's contents are extremely useful. I agree with the former reviewer that it is somewhat "dense" at times, but that is the nature of a book that goes this far into the topic. I know a lot about driving and so I was very pleased by the level of depth, however its definitely not a book for the beginner or someone without patience (the language is dry and heavy). I certainly haven't read the whole thing cover to cover but I've learned a lot just by reading the more important chapters and skimming over things I didn't need to read.

Only book written on freeway driving itself

Got this for my husband who was a commercial truck driver a few years back, so he's experienced and very knowledgeable and interested in freeway driving which is the topic of this book. he had always remarked that the driving education books that were out there didn't really focus on his task of being on the freeway 99% percent of the time and so this book fits the niche very nicely being focused to this very specific topic. it goes into great depth on highway driving and is sure to teach something new to the old and new driver alike.
