Book Review of Clouds of Hungry Dogs by Gabriel Ricard

Gabriel Ricard is one of those poets that you can spot a mile away because he has such a distinctive voice. He does balancing acts between poetry and prose, creating one- to three-page short stories at a time.
Most of his poetry, written in third person, has a female protagonist. One gets the feeling that this female is in one way cynical and in another way romantic. “But she loved him” is said twice in the poem “ Survivors of the Sky.” In “Four Out of Her Five Children,” the protagonist “was the girl who loved him back in elementary school. However, behind it all lurks a probably teen pregnancy, as in “Pregnancy Jackpot” or “Write a Country Song About It,” in which the female protagonist “read him the riot act with a fake sonogram.” Such jaded irony makes all the poetry a little rough around the edges.
“Both of Them Wore White” describes this romantic cynicism well. After a long tirade of what one wonders is mutual emotional abuse, Ricard ends the poem with “They stopped going out… / so they can hold on / to the good things for another forty years.” In the rare situation in which a man is the protagonist, as is the case in “When the Basics Fail,” even he is a cynical romantic as well when “he always has enough self-control / to stop reading the rest of the wedding invitation.”
Sometimes, when there is no love-struck female in the picture, the poetry can be downright disillusioned. The feeling of being a “luckless, questionable veteran at 35” just about sums it up (“When the Basics Fail”).
Since he has so many stories, he has many characters, unless one assumes that the female and male are always the same person throughout. As in “Both of Them Wore White,” one gets the feeling that there are “ten thousand clones / … twenty million extras.” And all of these characters are well-defined and well-described. For instance, in “Pregnancy Jackpot,” Ricard introduces some loiterers: “They’re hopelessly hoping someone will think the way / they’re leaning against the side of the building / says volumes about their character.”
These characters are at times in so much pain that you can’t help but be in pain yourself. Every relatable moment recalls a painful memory. I’m sure many people can relate to that time when you “only wanted to call the people / whose numbers he [you] didn’t have.”
As for writing style minus an overarching thematic mood, Ricard is an expert at twists of phrase, making you take a double-take at “funeral home comedians” from “The Dining Room Gallery” or “learning to dance / when you’re falling down a flight of stairs” from “When the Basics Fail.”
As Ricard says in “While At Sea,” before you buy this book, I “hope you can juggle fifteen stories at once / and almost twice as many characters.” And once you are finished with Clouds of Hungry Dogs, you can feast your eyes on Bondage Night at Darling Carla’s.

A fun and enjoyable diversion from reality

I ordered this book as a good friend of mine recommended it. Now, I'm not a huge poetry kinda guy. My experience with poetry is generally limited to whatever happens to be scrawled on a bathroom wall. However, I actually really enjoyed this. Its a quick read which is perfect for me as I don't often have much time to devote to lengthy novels. My favorite poem is "Oklahoma City's Hollywood Cafe." and "Write a Country Song about it" I am actually rereading the book now and marking off some of my other favorites.
Many of the poems paint unique and abstract pictures of some of the more interesting people in life. Have you ever sat at a bus stop or airport and looked around you wondering what the other peoples lives are like? This book is the personification of all those 2 minute conversations, and short travel based relationships that we have. Not in a mean or derogatory way but a glimpse into the often complicated lives of total strangers.
I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves poetry or is generally curious about it. It's a great way to dip your toe into the poetic pond. This book is also perfect for anyone that enjoys people watching and catching those often interesting fragmented conversations.

Mad and wonderful story-poems

Gabriel Ricard is a natural storyteller and these are story-poems. Stories from a mythical American landscape somewhere between Frank Capra and Bukowski. One hesitates to call it street poetry because though these are dispatches from the post-industrial inferno, there is no self mythologizing here. In fact, I don't believe the author as a presence shows up even once; not a single "I" to be found and the narrator is rendered a ghost in his own landscapes. The characters here strike a balance between flawed humans and mythological screwups. There's Janice the waitress who one day just had enough and Jack The Bear (who didn't get his nickname from the movies) and June Bell who ran away to New York City (maybe) and the old man who believes JD Salinger plagiarized his dreams and an entire cast of madmen and burned out femme fatalles. Gabriel channels them like spirits, like stories around a campfire; these poems can continue to haunt the reader well past sunrise.
