A garden tour through poems and images

Vincent Covello’s photos and Charlotte Mandel’s poems converge on a garden in eastern Long
Island that was sculpted from primeval woods. The resulting book is a visual treat with Mandel’s poems serving as a highly-skilled eye on the shapes,colors, and atmosphere of what appears to be a secluded garden. If one were the Emperor of China, this garden would be a domain of exquisite, solitary pleasure. Served by the poet and photographer, the garden offers access to all of us taken by the beauty of flowers, trees, sculptures or simply by the play of light.
The artists take us places in this garden where the ordinary viewer might never go. In “Moonflower,” for example, Covello’s photo of a flower that blooms only at night prompts the following description of the blossom from Mandel:
Rising like a bugle
from green
veined leaves
nibbled by moth larvae
In the photo, the white blossom is highlighted against a black background, but
fine delicate hooks
pierce the blackness beyond (p. 35)
Mandel’s ability to find the exact words to accompany the photographic image sends us back to the photo. In this slim volume, word and image truly intersect, complementing and enhancing each other.

Reading the poems by Charlotte Mandel in THROUGH A GARDEN GATE, I am reminded of what Robert Duncan wrote of H.D.'s lines, each having its discrete intention, each achieving perfect expression. Mandel's lush and careful language is called forth by Vincent Covello's exquisite photographs in wonderful collaboration. Where is this place? It is redolent of a deep, contemplative tranquility, rare in this world (maybe less rare in art). Take this lovely book into your heart, for it's "showing you / a way the way".
