The Coney Island Kid Strikes Again!
By Bill Yarrow
When you pick up a book entitled The Novel, you don't expect to find a book of poems, but that's exactly what this book by James Reiss is. And not just the run-of-the-mill, shoddy, trivial, indifferent poems currently pervasive, but confident, accomplished, masterly and masterful poems. Reiss is the real deal and so is his latest book. He's witty in poems like "The Novel" and "How Now Brown Cow," he's moving in poems like "Marilyn" and "Jack," he's funny in poems like "A Hop, Skip, and a Jump" and "Doggerel for Mrs. Brenda Marks," he's naughty in poems like "Necking with Ona" and "O Wha Ta Goo Siam," he's learned in poems like "Putting on Carpet Slippers" and "This Present Life," and that's not the half of it! The man's a brilliant poet. One snippet from "Three Leos" will suffice:
The sky grows dark as wildebeests at dusk.
I hear a rustle come from dusty shrubs
& sniff a pack of black-backed jackals' musk.
You still trying to get published in The New Yorker? The New York Times? Agni? The Atlantic? Beloit Poetry Journal? Prairie Schooner? Nimrod? Slate? That's where Reiss' work appears! That's where these poems appeared! Be impressed, but buy the book and read the poems. You'll be even more impressed.

I haven't enjoyed a collection this much
By Michael
I haven't enjoyed a collection this much, poem for poem, in a long while. As Reiss in one poem credits the photographer Robert Capa, he has a knack for hitting the shutter with unsettling timing, producing a poetry "that catches havoc / just as it hits / headfirst." Or like the sparrow in another poem, his poems slam into the picture window of an elusive transcendence to vivid effect.

A fine new poetry collection by James Reiss
By Bill Luvaas
Critic Carol Muske-Dukes has written a glowing review of James Reiss's new collection in The Huffington Post. Like Muske-Dukes, I also like Reiss’s focus on slowing things down in this collection—and in Reiss’s poetry in general. Nostalgia fits in there somewhere, too, very much so. Maybe that is what nostalgia is all about: slowing things down, not letting time get by us too quickly. Reiss explores this in all his work. Special moments and images from the past seem to be sitting there beside us, haunting the present and making it more poignant. He is a master at capturing a scene--either from the present or past--in a few incisive images, so it takes form in the mind's eye like a masterful photograph. I could not recommend this book more highly.
