Laura Van Prooyen is the author of an earlier collection of poems, Inkblot and Altar, and her poetry has appeared in The American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, and elsewhere. She is a recipient of grants from The American Association of University Women and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.

Ms. Van Prooyen has written a beautiful book of poetry. A thought-provoking and intense body of work that deserves a read by anybody interested in poetry. You won't be disappointed. Glad I got the book before it became out of stock.

Stunning Poems

These stunning poems capture the burning intensity of ordinary life. Sharply honed images reveal love’s danger and mystery: "The man she met in the woods / with whom she stood knee-deep in mayapple / naming one hundred birds." And the violent tenderness of a mother’s love: "When my body pushed and I shattered / like a mess of stars, or a windshield, or— / I never could describe it …." I read a lot of poetry, but this book stopped me in my tracks. It made me see for a few precious hours that my house is on fire, too.

Gorgeous poems, page after page.

A gorgeous collection of poems that examines the complexities everyday life. The writer artfully explores ideas of longing, loss, regret, and uncertainty, but also observes moments of stark beauty, love, and desire. I really admire the spare, subdued tone of these poems, the precision of language, and the wit that undercuts the poet's observations about the strange world around us. Just lovely. I'll be reading these poems again and again.
