About the Author
Phillip Egelston's first published poem appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in March of 1977. Often lyrical, his subject matter and his style have been eclectic over the years. In this first published collection, "Reste Placide," he highlights his continuing interest in concision and compression—the fruit of an abiding interest in poets who have often mastered a technique of gemlike quality, poets as diverse as Emily Dickinson and Samuel Menashe, Robert Francis and Kay Ryan, Olav Hauge and Juan Ramon Jimenez.

One day in the laboratory, I placed a drop of solution on a glass slide and looked through a microscopic lens to watch a crystal grow.
I watched in amazement as tiny segments moved through the solution and fit themselves perfectly into the distinctive pattern of that particular salt. I had never seen this before. Time slipped away. After that, I tried many times, but I could not recreate the experience. But I relive the experience when I read the small poems in Phil Egelston's "Reste Placide". Each word has found it's perfect position, and in the clarity created by white space, each word is a jewel in itself. Egelston's words contribute color and sound, and rhythm is established by length of line. These qualities reveal the essence of the poet's intention. There is beauty here. It is an offering that Egelston gives to his readers.
